I think ideally every lifter under the age of 13 should attempt to go 6 for 6 at every meet.

Not to get too far from the subject, but I think ideally EVERY lifter should attempt to go 6 for 6 at every meet.

In the sport of weightlifting strength is only potential until technique fulfills it.  Technique is about making lifts! the heaviest lifts that one can make.

For the under 13 crowd (at a National meet) all successful lifts (up to 6) should be totalled and the lifter with the highest total wins.

Consider that at least three of our top women lifters --Carissa, Cheryl and Danica-- all medaled at their 1st Junior Nationals, I think, at age 13.

I agree with much said in this thread. I very much like the idea of using the total of all six lifts to determine medalists. Thus, a young lifter wouldn't be automatically out of the competition if he/she missed a lift, but they would be at a disadvantage. There would therefore be pressure to go six for six, which is a hard thing to do even if you are conservative with your weight selections.

What do you all think of increasing the necessary coaching certification level for this age group to senior or regional? In such case, the senior or regional course could offer an entire section on training these kids.

Great stuff, please keep it coming. What else can we do to help this age group succeed in our sport?

Since we are having this great discussion, I was wondering if there was any interest in having a meet for just 12 and unders.  I could host it here in Schererville IN.  I was thinking maybe sometime on a Sat in September.

I want to count all 6 lifts for the total.  If I can get the plates quickly enough, we will use the 1 kg rule.

How about it, anyone interested?

Rufus,

I'm just starting my second year at the school and the program is still developing. But, I am interested in such a meet and may be able to bring a few kids.
