Official Statement
« on: Apr 16, 2012, 09:59 AM »
I have recently been made aware of two testing failures from our gym, Average Broz Gymnasium.

The first was from an out of competition (OOC) blood test performed February 7th.  Pat Mendes tested positive for elevated levels of Human Growth Hormone (HGH).

The second was an in competition (IC) test performed at the 2012 US Senior Nationals.  Josh Gilbert tested positive for Furosemide (diuretic).

Both substances are listed as Prohibited Substances on the WADA Prohibited Substance list.

Both Pat and Josh have accepted the provisional suspensions and will comply with any additional measures that are required of them.

We are sorry for any negative attention that this may bring to the sport of Olympic Weightlifting in the USA and we hope for the best from American lifters in the future.

How come, John? Any mistakes about testing? Or medical drugs?

I am interested in the social causes of this. Furosemide may be:
- an improbable in those circunstances medication for blood pression.
- a semi - innocent tentative of low weight
- a estrategy to cover more serious drugs

The other case, HGH, seems  have no several interpretation.

My conejecture  is  that those cases are  not the curious experimentation of a free man, but the  means attempted to obtain or mantain economical advantages or  resources.

In my vision, if the private and public organization linked to sport offer a desproporcionate money as sponsorization, this phenomena will be general and not the isolated adventure of a curious

The USAW is getting exactly what it deserves.

Sad to hear.  I know there was a lot of conjecture that Pat's gains were there result of substances, I guess this proves what so many were saying.  Still I was hoping that he was just talented.  As it stands it still seems to be true what is said about Olympic lifting on the world platform.  "That you can't hope to be successful in high level competition without being on something."

Probably society must self - ask what about the objective of sport. From Coubertin to us, it seems becomes a roman circus (for different ways, socialist and capitalist countries converged to similar corruption). Sponsors, shows, money, TV restrictions. The secundary takes the place of the central and we have the logical consequences.
