I think I have found a way to REALLY make a change.
« on: Nov 04, 2011, 11:17 PM »
I was reading a Men’s Health magazine a few days ago out of boredom while I was at the gym during midnight, resting for my second training session for that day. There was a piece about Crossfit, an infamous fitness-fad related to the concept of being a “jack-of-all-trades” fitness guy.
Of course, being a self-proclaimed weightlifter such as myself, I would not take such an abominable article so seriously. I was reading to mock what I was reading.

But then I had an epiphany…
I’m sure I am not the only person who feels this way: We go to a commercial-gym to do our usual training session and we see countless brainwashed people do pointless activities minute-by-minute, hour-by-hour, day-by-day, year-by-year. We often get irritated when these men and women approach us to give unsolicited advice such as “why don’t you use lower weight and higher reps? You build more muscle that way, dude.” or unwanted comments such as “Hey, not too deep. You’re gonna hurt yourself, dude.”
We witness these things happen. We are a part of a small group of (elite) people who are light-years ahead of these people as far as fitness wisdom is concerned.
…But they are the ones who get the glory.

This whole thing is about politics. If sheer talent and true credibility is all that one really needs in order to have a great influence in the fitness industry, then Weightlifters and Olympic Athletes who have actually walked the walk will be the ones who will rule the magazine shelves. But the true puppeteers of the written media are the businesspeople who knows more about advertising that rhabdomyolysis.
Think about it. The owners of Men’s Health and MuscleMag choose which articles they want to be published more than what needs to be published. All of this is possible due to their ability to fund their projects…

Isn’t it wise to play the game the same way they do? If it works for them, why would it not work for us?
What we need are a group of ambitious people who have the money to establish a website, a publishing company, or something that will allow them to be in a position of authority.

Until this happens, I highly doubt we will make a significant change in the fitness industry.

Not really on your topic but thought I'd mention it.  I do give crossfit a little credit in that it has done a decent job exposing more people to Oly lifting.  Now ususally they have poor technique or are not looking to compete but it has garnered more interest in the lifts and for some c-fitters they do try to do the lifts right and some have migrated away from c-fit to oly lifting as a result.

I think the issue with the mag is that people are going to do what they want to do, right or not.  The magazine just gives them a way to legitimize what they want to do cause "I read it is muslce and fitness or men's health."

crossfit has also made olympic weights more available to the general population in western countries, so training with crap weights in a commerical gym (?for night people)is really a last resort these days
There is no shortage of stories where a small business person has been hit with tens of thousands or more of legal costs from their own lawyers. Then there is the potential of having to pay for the other sides legal costs if the small business person loses

In 1980, I was expulsed from 2 (the 2 existents) gym in Uruguay because I lifted with "too much kilos". I worked in a bank and obtained a credit to buy a bar from Argentina. So, from those years, I trained in my house as priority.
I think you need not  claim for the glory. The peace is already very well. Can you lift? Wonderfull. Claim only for you have the freedom to train as you want. An old friend have a plastic hand with a lifted central finger to show to importune people. After this, your weights speak for you. And you may show fingers and more fingers to stupid people.
