Talk to me about Oly and old back injury...
« on: Oct 10, 2011, 11:59 AM »
I've toyed with Olympic Lifting for years, never getting as proficient as I'd like to but it seems to--more than ever--fit my goals (and it's just an awesome sport!).

Just wanted to get some feedback on whether anyone here has or is currently training with a herniation or other back "issue" and how it's gone for them. I've been thinking about training 6 days a week but keeping everything light and being patient. Tons of singles, doubles and some triples.

Any stories or experiences would be helpful, thanks everyone!

I have not herniation, but my back gives problem if I work without paying atention to it.
So, if I make 2 x week hyperextension with  weight on the neck, problems vanish 100%.
Other friends , until with herniation, have good results with diverse hard lumbar works

Your approach sounds reasonable to me.  The low reps should protect your back in that fatigue shouldn't become a big factor.  And light weights will hopefully allow for some good technique training.  If you're like me, you can use all the technique improvement you can get.  Best of luck to you!

Thanks, guys for the replies thus far. It's interesting to note that I used my old vertical leg press and I'm pretty sure my-as yet-minor-back issue didn't like it. I seem to feel better all over if I squat often even if it's an easy session. I try to never grind out a squat and like Broz, don't deadlift very often as I can't recover from it.

Anyway, if there's any more input on this subject I'd be excited tohear from you!
