power snatching on build up sets?
« on: Oct 02, 2011, 04:43 PM »
what do people think about using power snatches up untill about 85 percent and then start full snatching when you have to. That is what i usually do. I think power snatches have helped to make me much more explosive on the pull.

However, people have told me that its better to do full snatches even with light weights to ingrain the motor pattern etc.

any thoughts?

From my understanding, the high-level lifters do the power versions simply because the weight is too light to pull themselves under when warming up. Also to save wear and tear, but I doubt we are nearly at their level. Squat or split versions are probably the best bet for newbies such as myself (and you too, I would assume).

In my experience, the power versions of the lifts (if done properly) are a GREAT way to strengthen your pull.

However, it has a zero carryover to the "pulling-under" aspect of the classical lifts. That's where actual practice of the lifts and pulls (snatch-pulls and clean-pulls) come into play.

In the older Soviet era texts, there used to be about an even split of "other snatch" e.g. power snatch with 50-80% weights, and the rest full-snatch "classical snatch" with weights varying from light to heavy

In the former, developing specific qualities like power is the goal which requires maximum effort, in the latter the aim is to develop consistency, timing, body-bar awareness (where is the bar, where am I in relation to the bar, can I get myself under the bar)

do a bit of both, even add from hang from different positions, thighs, knees and shins if you want, just do not neglect the "power" of the full snatch has on your nervous system, technically and at max!  :;o)

BIG PROBLEM!!!!
Power snatch is another exercise, mixing with snatch you only create confusion in your movements and concentration.
You automatically think and warm - up in terms of power snatch, not of snatch.
The power snatch do not prepare for the snatch as efficiently as snatch do.
When you reach the 85%, you are really near of the 100% of power snatch, so you add a critical point in an inadequate moment.
Is better warm up with more kilos, and classical snatch.

Thanks for the responses, a lot to think about. I think i will start power snatching up to 85 or 90kg and then drop back down and build up the full snatch from 80?

Doing 1 power snatch then 1 squat snatch on your warmups could work.
