Chis is right, Suley is the best ever, unless you want to change what best ever means. As far as weight lifted, in competition, compared with bodyweight, Suley is the best hands down. Now the most successful weightlifter may be someone else? Dimas has three golds and a bronze to his credit. Everyone has their favorite lifters for different reasons. Yes, Sagir's 375 total @ 77 at Athens with his tennis player physique is impressive, especially with the speed he did it, but that doesn't make him the best ever even though he is a favorite for some including one of my favorites. The light guys will always be kilo for kilo better, and Suley is at the top of those guys.

I define "best" and "greatest" as the strongest split-jerker/power-jerker in Olympic history, which goes to Taranenko. He has officially lifted more than anyone else in an official competition...

So he's my number one favorite. ;)

On the other hand, Sagir is my favorite as far as pound-for-pound strength. He would shock people in a USA commercial gym.

Very interesting topic,

I think the obvious answer is Naim as he set some amazing WRs and besides winning 3 olympics, he would have also been close to winning 2000 had he opened 2.5kg lighter and would have also been the favorite in 1984 when Bulgaria boycotted the games.

There are other guys like Victor Solodov who lifted ridiculous weights (190+233 @ 90), but had a fairly short carrier and never made it to the olympics (boycott)

Naim? Nah. I'm not buying it.

The guy is a midget and midgets have an advantage in lifting. I would rather see a skinny Sagir do his thing than a deformed human-being do stuff that taller people couldn't do...

So for me, Naim is awesome, but not my favorite.

really??!!! dude get over yourself

You haven't broken any rules around here but for the record I am going to say I find your comment above repugnant.

I'm sure he is just saying what many think about short athletes. We all know many tall people believe they deserve special status and that most people agree, especially in Amerika.

maybe back to the topic at hand...

How about Zacharavich, sometimes forgotten despite how he lifted Super-heavyweight weights at under 110.  Also the second most dominant lifter in the 88 games (after Naim)

I believe also #3 or #4 all time on Sinclair,  likely would have won another Olympics in 84 as well.  Although he did sort of fall off the table after 88.

Shame about Piserenko never even making it to the Olympics as well, behind Alexiev for the olympic spot in 1980 and then the boycott in 84, almost a surefire Champion in both years if given the opportunity.

The sinclair formula is not appropriate for all-time lists, was not made for such things. Only the golden standard can do so: http://weightliftingexchange.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=192&Itemid=62
