I would strive to figure out a way to make weightlifting a money generating enterprise.  If it were possible to make it a self sustaining monetary venture, that can grow, it would have far beneficial effects.  It would be good to make the contests more exciting for the layperson and the potential payout for success higher to entice athletes to look at weightlifting as a viable professional sporting option.

I would say I differ from some of the approaches listed in that I would set my organization up as a benevolent dictatorship.  I would be the head and I call the shots.  I would still stive to have the best minds in exercise science and buisness at my disposal for advice but I feel swift difficult decisions need to be made at times without being bogged down with buerocracy of coming to the decision of a group of individuals through a voting process.  This would mainly be for the governing of the organization as a whole.  I would have smaller teams (clubs) that are allowed to coach themselves as they see fit.  The chosen coach of the lifter would be the coach for any level of competition as they would know thier athlete best.

This sounds cool.

I would do the same and put great investment on the commercialization of the sport and on educating the media about the benefits of weightlifting with sports performance and health. AND I would fund qualified coaches to build training centers where they would get paid to train people the same way personal trainers get paid.

I believe advertising the sport successfully and making it a business venture would provide enough funds for a weightlifting organization to be dependent of all government assistances.

I think the second point of Andy very similar to my aproach. I stay happy that, after more of 20 years in weightlifting, see that a position takes form.

The first point I´m not probably a great supporter, but I think is better weightlifting generate its own resources (as football, basket, etc.) and not to be a parasite of public finances. I think nasty, especially in poor countries, as Uruguay, a lifter live as a playboy with the money generated by the work of the people (and people that have not interest in the career of the guy).

Thats well said Arturo but I would point out your statements are just as true in a wealthier country, since wealthy countries still have poor people.

The problem with your theories of a benevolent dictator, Andy, is that your training center would simply be far less fun to live at and train at than mine. My training center would be the time of their life for the athletes that live there, assuming we each had billions to burn of course. So, my center would out-compete more authoritarian ones in the long run.

Most certainly we would have a clubhouse of some kind, with beer. But the way an anarchistic center would work is pretty simple. As the employer, I pay for big snatches and clean and jerks in big competitions. What you do with the money is your business. Certainly there will be plenty of space in my training center to allow the athletes the opportunity to fully explore their potential.
