Hi Simon.    You have to distinguish between drinking while in a training period and having a few beers to celebrate after a competition.     If in a period of a few months before a competition you have a beer now and then so what.     It won't affect your competition.     But don't drink on a regular basis.     The same logic with everything for instance sleep.    If you sleep only 5 hours every now and then you can still train.    But if you do it too often you are going to pay the price.    Moderation in everything:    eating, sleeping and training.

i disagree with the statement "everything in moderation" being applied to training. drinking beer smoking tobacco and enjoying anything else this world can offer wont make you a worse lifter.PERIOD. that being said , people who think they have an advantage because they purposely avoid any drugs or alcohol are self rightous douches imo. if weightlifting is such a mental sport wouldnt doing what makes you feel good carry over more benifets than denying yourself from what most would consider harmless substances? training while loaded is a no no, but fitting partying in your training schedule is test of will . if you party and really "want" to be the best. you will.

Very Well Said Albert! Life is for living! These prissy uptight people never had what it took, the passion and lust for life, to be a good lifter and their envy leads them to want to stifle that spirit in those that do have it, to control it, to direct it to their liking, etc. Its not about better performance.

I love beer (it is my 'other hobby' listed in the intro), but I do think it is something to be careful with. Anecdotally, I have found that drinking inhibits my recovery. I try only to drink before off days where the reduction in recovery rate won't be felt as severely.

Does this sound familiar to others?

It doesn't happen often, but if I drink a little too much then I don't sleep well. As long as I sleep well, there doesn't seem to be any negative effect. Maybe it's just my German heritage.  :)wink

My coach, who is Polish, always promoted a diet of steak, veggies and vodka.  "You are American, you can have one bottle.  If you were Russian, you could have two."  Rigert chain-smoked as well as drinking heavily.
