Judas is right, America does have problems of its own.  Many more than just mentioned.  But this is a multi-pronged problem in my eyes and I wouldn't necessarily place all the blame on freedom as that is just an avenue that allows those who expliot freedom to create these problems.

I think we can all say that the China training system does work.  It should not be forced on children to basically have them viewed as a tool to use and throw away if you can't hang or if you get hurt under the system and are no longer useful.  However, nor do I think implementing it today (for hypothetical reasons) in the US would elmiminate the problems with youth/adults here (many of the problems Judas listed are also problems in adults, which results in a viscious cycle).  It would produce stronger lifters however but is it worth the cost?

As Chris stated not many really care about weightlifting in the US (in the sport realm and in the political and life realm).  It has an importance in a place like China because it gives the children a chance to advance themselves/family by the benefits garnered by producing/succeeding and the better education they are able to recieve.  That is all they know and can hope to achieve but that is a big part of the problem.

To the extent that China subsidizes weightlifting through stolen money (taxes), they are impoverishing their entire population for the sake of worthless medals and "national glory." Its just a modern version of pyramid building. To the extent China is engaging in laissez-faire, and they are in some areas, they are prospering. But, they have all the same economic problems as America, as the Euro, and every other western nation- an economy built on the quicksand of fraudulent reserve banking and counterfeit currency. The best way to help poor kids in any nation is to stop taxing, regulating, dictating, and distorting the free choices of human beings and return to a silver-gold-commodity money.

Heh... Hey, i like the Pyramids... Possibly the single greatest achievement ov mankind.

I'm not advocating we become a communist juggernaut or selling our kids into slavery... i am personally HUGE on personal freedoms... that one is a BIG deal for me. What pisses me off is what people here have been doing with that freedom. To quote a line - 'Just like Rome, we fell asleep when we got spoiled...' This part ov the world, and my country in particular... what with its unfathomably vast natural resources, could be a world leader, but what do we do? we piss it away. Our countries could be sports powerhouses in EVERY sport imaginable... but dedication is ridiculed, loser-culture is embraced, and as a society in general we disdain testosterone. Where else do you find pretty much every sport in the book going the way ov 'retard T-ball'... anyone who even shows up gets a trophy! They are even now teaching that winning in school sports should be outlawed, because when someone wins someone else loses... and we wouldn't want a kid to feel left out...

In China kids are rigorously competing with each other for something greater, and gain so much from that that is not even physical-related (and i'm not talking about money and fame). In North America we play sports but dont keep score...

YOU may like the pyramids, but the slaves that built them likely had different feelings.

In all this above, I saw some truth and a lot of exaggeration.

Anywhere, things aren't what they could be from our own points of view. Dedication to what? When there is more reason and purpose in a young person's life, their own purpose, there will be more dedication.

I don't want to live in a place like China. I have not been there, but coworkers have (I live in Asia) and most of them quickly had enough of it.

"Winning isn't everything"  LOL, probably one of the most aggrivating sayings I hear come out of kid's and parent's mouths  :)banghead  This is usually because I follows me asking a kid "do you want to get better and win?" because the kids is lazy and failing to put in the effort or time to improve.

Where is the exaggeration...???  A meritocrisy we are not. And it is getting worse fast.

And no, i would not want to live in China. Hell, i have no desire to ever even GO to China... well, there are places in China i would love to sometime see, but their attack on personal freedom extends well past any diplomatic umbrella ov tourism. You take your chances going to a place like that.

What i was getting at is that despite the brutal childhoods most ov these kids must lead, i do wonder how much better off our fat, spoiled, irreverent, stupid, distracted and ignorant kids here are. I've been on both sides... i've been this kid (okay, i was never fat...), but i've also been the opposite... much later in life. And while the life ov an ascetic in North America is certainly no picnic, what kind ov life do so many 'free' kids today have...??? It is spiritually hollow and empty at best.

I remain vehemently critical ov western civilization because with all the potential we have here, even tiny baby steps in the right direction would net fantastic results... yet we are striding in the opposite direction.
