IWF HIJAB RULING EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY
« on: Jun 28, 2011, 09:20 PM »
Folks,
This was just handed to me and I will try to type as fast as I can based on this ruling.

The proposal from the USOC and USAW in relation to Muslim female athlete competition wear. Coffa declares" This issue was on our radar so we thank the USOC and our member Federation for prompting it and look forward to having increased global participation from removing this barrier.

The modified rule changes permits athletes to wear a one piece full body tight fitted "unitard" under the compulsory weightlifting costume.  The "unitard" will enable technical officials to effectively adjudicate areas of the body which are essential to the correct execution of the lift.

There is more on this and I am sure you will see the full explanation, including that IWF stating that they have always allowed head gear.

Meanwhile, another note:  from 22 Sept. 2009 till 31st December 2010.

Anti-doping fines, Anti-doping Fund, 1,465,222.44
TV Revenues, IWF marketing   1,600,318.05

Interesting eh?

btw, they are talking about electronic submissions on the technical conference.  That makes life a lot easier.

A few people may recall me calling for a full length singlete a number of years ago, to end stoppages for blood on the bar from shins. ;)

Wearing it under a normal singlet is silly of course- retarded actually.

The requirement to still wear a singlet over top the unitard will be beneficial to Adidas (IWF sponsor) or other singlet makers while they develop a full length singlet

Sounds typical to me- make the athletes hot in order to comfort the bureaucrats and their revenue stream. :)

I'm glad they changed the rules to allow more participation. Now if we can just get them to stop banning people for pot, creating more and more hoops to jump through in order to lift or coach, and stop wasting money on nonsense, maybe the usaw would start to suck a little bit less.

Yeah other people have too. I'm surprised how easy this went through.

Surely Adidas makes a speedskating suit they could plop into the 2012 weightlifting catalogue. I wonder if blue facepaint would be allowed.

Any idea why the USAW bans people for pot? It's obviously not a performance enhancer. Maybe an appetite enhancer. They don't want people giggling during competitions?

Also I noticed that people with any past criminal convictions can't be a USAW-certified coach, even if it was for something minor and stupid, years ago. Any idea why this is, and why the ban wasn't limited to doping, wagering or fraud offenses? Will this categorical ban be expanded to athletes?

Don't mean to hijack the thread.

I am have following this issue out of pure curiosity.  Even though a full body unitard is now allowed under a singlet, does this alone meet the muslim women's criterion.  In her presentation she wants to wear long socks or leg warmers up to her knee wrap.  Will this be allowed?  Are they going to make accommodations for her request for female officials? I believe she is requesting a female official at weigh in.  Is she also requiring a female official to judge her lift?
