I can't drop the bar either in the gym, and I lower to the thighs, skipping my shoulders. I agree with the others, don't let it hit your thighs, you've got to resist as it's going down. Even with resisting the bar, it's a sudden jerk on them, over and over. I do what I can with stretching but they still feel irritated.
