as a human being i feel for ''her'' NOT her beliefs, But  as a weightlifter i can give a CRAP what  religon you follow . You want to wear pants and sleeves and a hat when you lift DO it in training. You want compete with us FOLLOW OUR RULES! I hope usa weightlifting

When I saw the title of the article I thought there should be nothing wrong with a muslim woman wearing a hijab to lift in a meet. A hijab is the scarf covering the hair and neck. I've seen it in competition. But actually, nested in the article it says she wants to wear "modest Islamic attire covering her hair and body with the exception of her face, hands and feet" so basically, lifting in a full gown.

Maybe this is how the IWF rules will be challenged:
4.1.1.
The costume:
• may be one-piece or two pieces but must cover the trunk of the competitor;
• must be close fitting;
• must be collar-less;
• may be of any colour
* must not cover the elbows;
• must not cover the knees

The USAW is going to have to defend their reasons for rules being what they are. Are they there for good reason, or there arbitrarily? Is it impossible to judge the lift of somebody lifting in a gown?

Muslim women in Malaysia wear the singlet and don't cover their hair. I've even trained with them on a few occasions.

It raises many extremely deep issues, the most difficult in my opinion being the ownership of the word "Olympic." For instance, I see no reason Moslem women who wanted to have an organization with rules allowing lifting in such attire shouldn't be left free to do so and even to call it the "Moslem Olympics" or whatever. Personally, my religion fully expressed would mean clean and jerk only competitions. :)

The media is always so slanted. For instance they call it a "ban", when clearly she isn't banned, she just need to follow the rules of competition.

Really the solution is extraordinarily simple. Long socks, knee sleeves, t-shirt with turtleneck (or something similar), and wrist wraps that go up close to the elbows. All that is visible is some elbow and just above and below the knee sleeves. Pretty darn modest I think.

Nah, screw it. I call religious discrimination!
