I was thinking I'd set the bar 2-3" below final extention then dip my legs, extend my arms fully and push up with my legs only with 0-10% over max. Would that do anything? Strengthen back maybe?

It would be more of a support. It would also get you used to the feel of a heavy weight overhead. You could try to lockout the final few inches, hold it and then bend your legs and push up and down with your legs only.
If I was doing any better, I would be twins!!!

Why not?

Anne,

I think that if a young somewhat experienced lifter has good technique in the jerk, he/she would not need them. If a jerk is done correctly using the power from the dip (which should get the bar well above top of head level) and a deep split or squat, the bar should be locked and at arms length.

The reason I do them is because my technique is pretty pathetic and I rely on strength (which I no longer have, but am trying to build up)
