I don't think powerlfiters are delusional, they are strong guys. suits don't too much to the pull and it only helps off the floor.
When america was a dominant force in o-lifting, they would deadlift, bench, press.
I suspect novice lifters would benefit by adding 50kg to their 1rm deadlift

They'd benefit more by adding 50kg to their clean though!

The more I research Russel Knipp the more impressed I am. For a 5'6 man to press 2+xbw puts him IMO in the less than 2% of male population. I'm always amused when I run across an untrained large individual who delusionally perceives himself to be strong. When you put that ^ person in a gym (or backyard, etc.) w/ a real Oly old school lifter like Knipp the bubble is easily bursted when you say "Ok little 165lb Knipp just pressed 2x his bodyweight now you duplicate it the equivalent". The delusional idiot is then unable to C&P his own bw much less 2x it.
This whole scenario makes me think of Sergio Olivia's recounting his stroll on the beach & being "discovered" by a communist party leader & being told "Your going to be an Oly lifter" despite Sergio never touching a barbell previously.
I do, however, have to begrudgingly at the very least 75% agree w/ the Cuban Commnists in that they declared bodybuilding illegal. I'm convinced that "bodybuilding" is w/out a doubt the worst thing that ever happened to weight lifting in general. RIP Ben Weider by your brother Joe is w/out a doubt the single worst person ever connected to barbells. In fact if if the communists had been successful in eliminating bodyuilding the world woud be a better place. I don't think women give a **** honestly.

I am firmly convinced that the Oly lifts, particularly the C&P will develop more usable, real-world strength than any other exercise. The deadlift is close since its the first stage of the C&P but the C&P encompasses everything since your bringing a bar off the floor all the way to full arm extension, IOW a complete movement whereas the deadlift is a partial.
Draper say if he could do only (1) exercise it would be the C&P.

Don't count out deadlift (athletic stance deadlift, not powerlifting deadlift with wide stance) totally it has good application to real world uses for moving heavy objects and boxes. It teaches correct back positioning, engaging the core for stabilization, and lifting with the legs. But your getting more bang for your buck with a clean and press. I've also found that doing a combo lift with oly lifts (clean, jerk, front squat) for a few reps or doing 3-5 reps of clean and jerk has an increadibly larger testosterone response than doing a ton of volume of body building work. My program has switched to a bit more volume in the form of triples for oly lifts and in about 3 weeks I have noticed an increase in size (good for me, I'm trying to move up a weight class) and squats have been going up great with only a little added upper body supplemental lifts.
