intermediate, advanced & elite training......

Fella's, just a quick question...
my coach & i were talking last night. I was explaining how i feel the most effective when working in the range of 75 & 85 % of my 1RM. He went on to say how that's a great range to build on strength. He also suggested that intermediate, advanced & elite lifters generally spend most of their time training at a lower percentage, so they can focus on power / speed, with obviously some strength mixed in there.
Does this sound right? I'm not doubting my coach I'm just wanting to know what you've heard or experienced!

the bulgarians go to max everday, however I've also heard that even the soviets took a good perecentage of their training in the 90% range and then 75-85% was the 2nd most frequent percentages they lifted within, elite lifters don't lift with light percentages or if they do its not too often, medvedyev used very light perecentages a good portion of the time but training's evolved since then
