Squats and recovery from the snatch
« on: Feb 07, 2010, 12:57 PM »
Hi!
This is my first post here , still I would like to ask a few questions.

First of, my weightlifting total is joke. I did some snatches (about a year ago) for a couple of weeks but not much more. I did decided to start WL more seriously, well, quite recently though.

So, back to the topic...I back squatted 140 kg (last week) and according to that spread above I should be able to snatch 90 kg and C/J 112kg.
I know that my technique sux as I'm total beginner, but still my best snatch is 60 kg and C/J  80, maybe 85 kg (pathetic, I told you)
Now, speaking of snatch, my biggest issue is recovery phase. I don't have so much trouble snatching (and catching) 60 kg as I have with recovery. So, having in mind my squat numbers and everything else I want to ask is this normal ?? Am I supposed to squat 180 in order to recover from 70 kilo snatch ?
My best front squat is 125 kg btw, but I doubt I could do that much right now (haven't front squatted in a months)

Hi and welcome,

Your 140 kg squat is more than enough strength to recovery from your current max in the snatch. Could be that some other aspect of your strength is insufficient - strength in supporting the weight overhead? Probably some volume in overhead squats would help - not necessarily heavy.

Thanks, I'll go with overhead squats then !

I train at old weightlifting gym which turned powerliting many years ago, so I have access to bumper plates and everything  necessary but not much guidance - that's why I joined here.

Speaking of which, am I allowed to start training log here (later, eventually) considering that I'm still noob ? Reason is to get eventual feedback on my training, not to impress anyone, of course.

In addition to the overhead squats Shaun recommends, I would also recommend drop snatches/snatch balance work.

I assure you that your strength is sufficient to snatch 80kg. Technique is what you need. I can only back squat 140kg for 2-3 reps currently and I just got a PR in the snatch today of 80kg. My coach said that I should be snatching at least 85kg, but my technique is what limits me. Post some videos of you lifting so that the folks here can critique.

Get a coach if you haven't already done so!

Yeah I'm sure it will be better after some practice,..however here's form check video, from last year, just to give some perspective, even if I am bit embarased to upload it on youtube

(Also on m youtube channel there are videos of me squating 140 kg, front squating 125 and strict pressing 60 kgs for 10 reps)

No flames here :)

Aside from using the arms inappropriately during the pull it does look as if the recovery itself is more difficult than typical for a snatch. Let us know how the overhead squats work out.
