When you look at the bigger picture, paying $300 for a bar vs. $800 for a bar isn't that big of a deal.

I'm using two Eleiko bars, one is brand new, the other is 20 years old and still spins great. Apart from the knurling, they both perform about the same (there's been some design change in the past 20yr).

We have some cheap York bars...they seem to break every few months or so.

The brother of a friend of mine got an Eleiko bar at a second hand sports store for something like $100 in Nova Scotia. It was completely random and the employees had no idea what that item was worth.

Kaptain kayak, tell your brother i'll give him $200 for that Eleiko. 100% profit!!!

To the original poster, i'm as leery as anyone ordering from the US, but the Pendlay stuff seems good enough for the money, and ships easy enough. But i'm only 20 miles from a crossing, that sure helps. Can you not pick it up yourself? There are shipping-address businesses near any decent size border-crossing for this purpose. Brokerage is a nice scam, i'd want to avoid that too.

I'm in Guelph, ON but the DHS bar is prohibitively expensive to me being a poor underpaid grad student.

I have looked at Glens Pendlay Bar and if i was in the US i would definitely jump at it, however, i've been nailed in the past with huge brokerage and customs fees importing stuff before so i'm weary to order.

thanks for your comments guys,

Just send it to a shipping receiver place across the line and bring it across yourself. Most likely if you get a nice border gaurd they will not make you pay taxes. I think Canada has some sort of treaty on not taxing excercise stuff but I could be wrong, be prepared to pay GST and applicable taxes if need be.

I got my 1989 Eleiko bar for free given to me by my coach. Great condition and I love it. Spins just as good as a new bar.

Now there is a difference when buying a bar for your self and buying one for a gym. Bars at clubs or gyms will be beat to death. Most likely if it for personal use it will get treated better. We have three pendlay bars at my gym and the spin on them sucks. For bushing bars they are too stiff.

I am looking into buying a new pendlay HD bar to beat up with but I am not sure. $300 is reasonable, I want something I can really hammer and not worry about it. I am horizontally bars that hook to my rack and I like to use and I do not want to risk damaging my Eleiko bar. Also having 2 bars is nice when a buddy comes over to lift.

I'm with you dude. Bars  for a gym are different. I usually just go for Yorks then. They are good, last for a while, take a beating and don't have the Eleiko price tag.

I am in the market for a bushing bar that will stand up to a beating w/o bending.  I bought a cheap used bar and I bent it the first day.  :)ugh

I would recommend using the Pendlay Bar if you are on a budget, I have been using the econ bar for a year now and it works great.

Having worked in a college weightroom with all pendlay bars I have to say that they break quite frequently. Maybe the new models are better but, we moved onto Chapman bars and they are fairly decent. I saved up for about a year and finally got my baby, Eleiko is the only barbell, expensive, yes but, well worth it.

Hi, just curious as to what broke exactly?
