Weightlifting bars
« on: Feb 02, 2010, 03:57 PM »
Hey All,

I'm currently in the process of trying to find a half decent bar for weightlifting.

Unfortunately for me, being a grad student (and thus living in poverty lol) i can't afford anything too much more then $300 CAD. The other limitation of mine is that i'm in Ontario and pretty weary of ordering from the US (customs, brokerage, etc).

The only local options are the York Elite bar, which is out of my price range, or a stiff 30mm powerlifting bar.
I've looked at a bunch of bars and the only one that i can find that seems like it would work is the Rogue bar from rogue fitness (they have a Canadian warehouse in edmonton). http://www.roguecanada.ca/store/rogue_bar.php (w/f/s) has anyone ever used this bar? It seems like it would have good whip (28.5mm, 160,000PSI) but would it stand up to deadlifting 250kg+? or a clean of 140kg+?

thanks for your help  ):wlfter

A bar is useless without bumpers, do you have those already?

I would recommend using the Pendlay Bar if you are on a budget, I have been using the econ bar for a year now and it works great.

I'm in Guelph, ON but the DHS bar is prohibitively expensive to me being a poor underpaid grad student.

I have looked at Glens Pendlay Bar and if i was in the US i would definitely jump at it, however, i've been nailed in the past with huge brokerage and customs fees importing stuff before so i'm weary to order.

thanks for your comments guys,

JeffV,

I'm in Cambridge. Anytime you want someone to train with stop by. I have a pretty good setup in my garage. I have a 8x12 platform, squat racks and jerk blocks.

Cheers,
Craig

Having worked in a college weightroom with all pendlay bars I have to say that they break quite frequently. Maybe the new models are better but, we moved onto Chapman bars and they are fairly decent. I saved up for about a year and finally got my baby, Eleiko is the only barbell, expensive, yes but, well worth it.
