Relationship of squats to clean & jerk
« on: Jan 26, 2010, 12:41 AM »
I would like to be able to clean and jerk 100kg by April.

How much should I be able to front squat?

How much should I be able to back squat?

It can vary and just a precaution, raising squatting strength doesn't necessarily mean an increase in the clean & jerk, but generally the back squat can be from 125-140% of your clean & jerk and you should be able to smoothly front squat your max clean & jerk.

If you want numbers, let's say for now
front squat 115 kg
back squat 135 kg

I've hit a 100kg cj once and I can only front squat 105kg and back squat 115kg. It's going to be different for everyone because of technique and different strengths.

Check out the attached spreadsheet. It uses formulae developed from hopefully soon to be published research (Fry, Lucero, LeRoux et al. (author order/list may be different in published work) establishing the relationship between the front squat, back squat, snatch, clean and jerk, and total, on average, for national level qualifiers in America. Change the numbers for the squats (in top section) or lifts (in bottom section) under "Enter Data" and view the resulting equivalent in "Get result." Use kilograms of course. There is an "acceptable" range for the equivalents, but I don't have the number on hand.

Hope I don't get in trouble for releasing this before the research is published.  grouphug:)

Is this for both men and women? A few months ago I was playing around with meet result numbers in a statistical program and found that the ratios between the lifts were slightly different for women. (I only had snatch, cj, and total numbers).

I should look at the data again, but I also found a few other interesting things. For one thing, there was less of a relationship between age and total among women than among men. Hmm...can't remember what else.

No, this is only for men. The relationships could indeed be somewhat different (am sure they are) for women.

I just based this off of the 2009 Nationals data, so I didn't have a ton to work with. I wish I had squat numbers too.

I found that the average snatch as a percentage of bodyweight was 114% for women versus 152% for men. For clean and jerks it was 141% for women and 190% for men. Both lifts as a %BW differed significantly between men and women.

The difference between snatch and clean and jerk as a %BW did not differ significantly by sex (it was about 10-11% for both men and women)

Bodyweight was more strongly related to lifts for men than for women, though there were fewer women included in the data.

How did you get front and back squat dat? Any chance you could share it  :)wink ? (I imagine you can't, but it doesn't hurt to ask!)

At some point, I may be able to share the data in terms of numbers, in an anonymous fashion. But all personal information given by the subjects is completely confidential so I could not release who squatted what.
