I think i'm doing something wrong re: my snatch
« on: Jan 22, 2010, 01:51 AM »
My current training is mostly centred on the snatch (while doing basic GPP & core work).

I suspect i'm doing something wrong with the first (or maybe and the second pull). In the book that i have by greg everett on olympic lifting, it talks about holding the bar wide enough, that when the bars against your hip & when you use your leg to step up, the bar doesn't move.

In doing so, i'm finding the hook grip quite hard to hold when starting in the hang snatch position. From that position I"m supposed to do a verticle jump, shrug & raise the bar. But like i said, i can't seem to maintain the hook grip.

should i narrow my grip, harden the fcuk up, youtube it for you guys or what?! what are my options?

I would recommend the video first (youtube).  Otherwise, toughen up.  It takes a little while to get used to the hook grip.  You could also look at using straps for hang work, that's what I do.  I only hook for lifts off the floor.

The hook grip definitely takes awhile to learn.  I started weightlifting a little over a year ago.  For about a month of doing the lifts I thought the hook grip was a ridiculus idea.  It was painful and not secure at all.  Then, finally I got used to it and it is no problem.  It really isn't so much about toughening up, it is more of being persistent and getting accustomed to it.

Try taping your thumb, the hook grip was much more comfortable.
