Wrist pain

After cleaning yesterday I have some minor wrist pain, mostly on the little finger side. Is this normal after doing a lot of cleans? Should I be concerned?

Hi David, I'm a newbie to lifting as well. I've only been training for 6 months. In the beginning I had considerable wrist pain after cleaning and was told that I was trying to catch the weight with my hands instead of receiving it with my body. I also make sure I stretch my hands and wrists now. I still have minor irritation from time to time but I can usually tell that I've tried to catch the weight. And of course, ice is my friend!  ):wlfter

When I first started WL, my wrists were a little raw after cleans and/or jerks...the feeling went away after a few months, though I did buy PL style wrist wraps which help a lot

I had something very similar, but with snatches.  I found that once I moved my hand grip out to the collars (not tall, but long armed), that the problem ended, but I was "tweaking" my wrists after every snatch session.

I spent a lot of time stretching and holding the bar in the rack position with my hands on the bar before doing squat and power cleans.  I can remember catching weights much like Stallone caught the fake 315lb on the last Rocky movie when he clean and jerked it.  But never with that much weight - well, maybe since there's no way those six plates were real.  And if they were real, Stallones got the strongest wrists on the planet. 

I now wear the leather wrist straps thanks a good friend (Bull Ternus).

Thanks for the responses. Looks like I need to work on technique, flexibility and probably get some good wraps! I did snatches yesterday and didn't have issues with the wrist so it seems like a clean issue only for me right now.

If I had my time back I would have rethought buying PL wraps...I can crank down on them waaaayyyy too much. They're great for the FS and jerk if my wrists are raw, but you can't really clean or snatch in them as they provide too much support and your grip is compromised.

My coach only lets me use straps for shrugs and deadlifts. It gives me a better grip on the bar.
