Rules Question About The Jerk
« on: Jan 08, 2010, 06:48 PM »
I'm wondering if there is a rule on how low you can dip before the jerk.

For example, I clean the weight and pause; am I allowed to front squat the weight again and basically do a crossfit thruster?

I'm switching from the traditional jerk to the power jerk (form issues + lack of a coach = not good)...although I'd never actually re-squat the weight, I would like to dip a bit more.

The dip can be any depth (well most efficient for you), but you can't stop, then dip again. I hope that answers your question.

Why would you want to dip more? Do you want to lift less? The dip should be short and snappy. TBH, I don't think the jerk is that hard to learn. I'm a self-taught masters lifter and my jerk has never been a problem, even though I learnt it on a 32mm bar with metal plates. Short and snappy dip/drive and get the front foot right and everything else almost falls into place by itself.

I remember I was a power jerking before really devoting time to the split jerk. It felt weird at first but, you really need to stick with it and get fast feet. The split allows for a larger margin of error. That makes all the power and squat jerkers out there way more impressive though.

Is the split jerk still considered the best for heavy attempts or is the squat jerk now considered better? I've seen lifters use both and it seems they often go for the squat in earlier attempts and the splits on later attempts, but I haven't seen a ton of events so I could be just seeing something that isn't a real pattern.

Most lifters can split jerk more than they power (or squat) jerk.
