BERLIN - OLYMPIC weighlifting champion Matthias Steiner, who famously posed with his gold medal and picture of his dead wife after his Beijing triumph, is to become a father with his new girlfriend, report Bild.

Steiner, 27, won the super heavyweight category in Beijing with a clean and jerk of 258 kg and his success was all the more remarkable as it came just over a year after the tragic death of his wife Susann in a car accident.

Earlier this year, Steiner began dating German-TV newsreader Inge Posmyk, 39, and the couple are expecting their first child in March 2010 with the athlete hinting their wedding could follow soon.

'When we will marry is not yet clear, but for us the wish to get married was there as early as the wish to have a child,' Steiner told German tabloid Bild.

Steiner has not competed since an operation in January for a hernia, but is expected to compete in November's World Weighlifting Championships in Goyang City, Korea, to try to add the world crown to his Olympic title.
