Rochester to host 2010 National Junior Championships
The Rochester Amateur Sports Commission has landed another elite amateur event for the city.
The USA Weightlifting board of directors recently announced that it has selected Rochester to host the 2010 National Junior Championships to be held Feb. 26-28, 2010 at the Mayo Civic Center.
The three-day event will bring approximately 220 weightlifters to Rochester. It is the top USA weightlifting championship for junior athletes age 20 and under, and a few of the competitors might even earn a spot on the U.S. 2012 Olympic team.
"The final bid got down to us and Altamonte Springs, Florida", said Ed Hruska of the Rochester Amateur Sports Commission. "John Larsen (sports sales manager for the RASC) did an outstanding job with the presentation. To be awarded an event of this nature and beat out a Florida city in February reflects the reputation of our city and the Sports Commission."
The Rochester Amateur Sports Commission will work closely with Scott Safe, who owns the Safe Weightlifting and Athletic Strength Center, to run the event.
"Scott's expertise and knowledge of an event of this nature will assure Rochester hosts a quality championship," Hruska said.
