Question about hook grip
« on: Jun 07, 2009, 05:56 PM »
I dont know if this has been posted yet, but ill ask anyway. Ive seen alot of ppl use the hook grip. I have been using a normal grip(thumb over fingers). What is the benefit of the hook grip? if there is any difference.

It's a better grip on the bar! Used almost universally.

well your thumb IS going to get sore and raw, so transfer slowly, IE, do the first couple sets of your workout with the hook and the rest with an open grip and just keep going like that till you use hook almost exclusively.

And YES, once you are comfortable with the hook your snatch and clean should go up a few KGs

oh wow ok. i only got lbs weights. so a 10 to 15 lb jump would bee nice. and now i understand why theey tape the thumb. is there a high risk to say break my thumb with this grip

The hook grip is more important than wearing proper shoes.

Skillful technique accelerates the bar so sharply near hip level, that the force on the hands

is suddenly DOUBLE the weight on the bar.

So if you are lifting weights that are really challenging for your leg/back strength level,

your hands WILL NOT be able to hold on w/o the hook tech (or even if you do hold on,

the trajectory will be so disrupted that you'll miss the lift).

Taping the thumbs properly (especially if you can get Conform) makes another huge difference.

You should get a 20+lb boost once the hk gr is well-adapted.
