Hernia Repair Question
« on: Mar 31, 2009, 09:06 PM »
So here is my question I had a double hernia repair last June and for the most part have come back from it.  MY problem is anytime I ever try to do an ab work around were they inserted the mesh I get pain and soreness.  I saw the doc last December and he said by the end of February I should have no pain.  Now for the olympic lifts I don't have any pain.  I decided to hold off on ab work until then and start work after Feb. on the 28th I a competition and decided since I have the week following off I would start working back into ab work.  Monday I did some light ab work (toe touches, heel touches, reverse crunches) and today I did elbow bridges, hovers, or planks (whatever you want to call them).  No I have pain by my hernia repairs again.  I figured that it was just the scar tissue realigning but when I was organizing weights in the weight room I kept getting a sharp pain that would come and go in one spot on the right side.  Now about an hour later it seems anytime my abs have to work on that side I get a sharp pain that will come and go and is very brief (yes this is a very different pain than soreness).  Now the problem is it happens when just walking and bending forward.  Did anyone ever have a hernia repair and have this same sort or problem or can give me any adivice

I have had a few minor injuries and was even slowed down by a double hernia repair, but I plan to lift and compete until I drop dead.

Tom I know you said in another post that you had the same thing done, do you have any insight or advice?  I am going to call the doc tomorrow but if anyone has anything to help calm some of my fears please give it.

Held off on calling the doc today, it felt fine.  But I also just took the day off as I had planned.  Tomorrow I will do some abs again so we will see what happens.  Hopefully I am just being overly cautious in the matter.

Did not do any abs anymore this week, found blood in my urine on Thursday.  Doctors do not know why because I have no pain, so I am basically not doing anything and just taking it easy for now.  CT scan is scheduled for Tuesday night.  Will update on the hernia question once I can start doing abs again.  Hopefully soon...  :)banghead

Andy, I can't give any meaningful help other than to wish you speedy recovery. Hang in there.

So far I know two things, as of yesterday on a second urine analysis there was no blood.  We have also ruled out a few causes but they still do not know for sure what it is.  I am still waiting on the results of an x-ray.  I am trying to have any test done that is less expensive than a CT scan because I cant afford it (this is a gamble because it could cost me more in the end).  The scan has been pushed back for now.  So I decided to do abs yesterday anyway because all of the things the doctors think it might be (besides rhabdo, which if it was has cleared up because of my over-excessive hydrating last week) exercise would make no difference.  No pain with the abs Monday and I will do some more tonight to see what happens.

Did second day of abs yesterday, consisted of the bridges (aka planks, hovers, whatever you call them), 1st set 1 minute for front and each side, 2nd set was 30 seconds front and sides.  Sore on the left side this time.  More of a dull sore but started almost immediately after exercise.  Seems the bridges are the exercise that seems to be aggravating it which surprises me because I figured it was mainly bracing which occurs during lifting so I thought there would be no trouble with it.  I will just keep chronicling what happens in case someone ever has a hernia repair in the future to deal with this.  For the record I am about 10 months out now and ab work is the only thing that causes soreness, no lifting causes any problem.  I may give it till the 20th if soreness does not seem to decrease in frequency at that point I am calling the doc again (looks like it could be another year of maxed out insurance again).

Didn't do abs today, I have the stomach flu now.  Looks like when my body attempts something it goes all out.  On the bright side I do think I got some ab work in the whole process qith violent contradctinons and bracing.
