85kg C&J world record
« on: Mar 13, 2009, 08:03 PM »
Here's Zhang Yong with 218kg:

Weightlifting   World record 218kg  Zhang Yong in Israel 1998

This was done about 11 years ago in Ramat Gan, Israel, during the 1998 university world championships. Breaking a world record was (to say the least) unexpected at that sort of competition, so the video my coach took back then (only a few days ago converted to digital and youtubed) is probably the only one.

The video is unedited, so it takes a while to get to the lift and you see his 200kg C&J first.

Wow, that sure is amazing!!

Did he ever go to the Olympics?  What other big victories are to his credit?

He is a thick 85kg lifter. Looked really powerful too. He would have crushed Dimas.

He had a relatively weak snatch and was second fiddle, or worse, to other 85 kg lifters from China. He won no major titles.

At the Montreal World University Championships he snatched 150 and jerked 200 kg

2000 World University 77-85 kg

Cool to see the full array of colored plates like in the Coupa de la Spana vids.

I kind wished there was a standard way to build that kind of load -- going w/ 165+ in all four colors before going w/ 2 pr of reds and a blue (plus the 5k's) to make 175, then going up to 215+ w/ all colors before going w/ 4 pr of reds for 225, etc.

Of course, if O-lifting re-booted to go w/ only 20s/10s/5s (in blue/yellow/red) for the full diameter plates, then you would have a regular build-up of all colors before each move up to the next pair of 20s.

The proportional plate thickness that has become standard in the last decade would make this work great (plus it would give the eqpt makers a boost to re-outfit everyone w/ the funds to update immediately).

Of course, if I could implement all my brilliant ideas for improving lifting, would that make me as big a genius as Obama??

Isn't the reason for the heavy fewer plates versus the several lighter plates better for keeping the center of gravitiy more central? That's what I always thought but, I always do like to see all of the colors.

Hi Erik!!

Yeah, that used to be more of the case, but nowadays the 25's are more than twice as thick as the 10's, and 20's and 15's proportionally in between, so I don't think it would be as much a problem.

It's nice that the most modern 25's are wider than the ones from before, but they are still not as good to use as the 20's, IMNTBHO (NTB = never to be).

I think USAW "misplaced" about a million dollars. And according to Charniga they basically use competitions as their personal vacations, so they are almost qualified for a bailout...
