York Olympic Standard & Certified 190 Kg Set 1983
« on: Mar 02, 2009, 04:52 PM »
 1983 PRICE:
Just looking over my old December 1983 issue of Bob Hoffman's MD magazine, I noticed the price of the York Olympic International Bumper Set. The 190 kilo set (418 pounds) was priced at $795. The set included a York chrome vanadium bar. The bar if sold seperately without the bumpers was priced at $205. The 190 Kg International set included two 25 kilo bumpers, two 20 kilo bumpers, four 10, four 5, four 2 1/2, four 1 1/4, with collars. Seperately the bumpers sold at $1.63 per kilo. The 25 kilo was sold for $134.95 a plate. The 20 kilo bumper was sold for $123.95 per plate, and the 15 kilo bumper was sold for $112.95 per plate.

Regular York Olympic Standard cast plates 2 1/2, 5, 10, 25, 35, and 45lb. were priced at .74 a pound. The 400 pound cast iron plate set, AKA "York Olympic Standard Barbell" was sold for $437.50. This style was also made in the 310 pound set for $373.50. Collars were $38.75 a pair.

I remember when we thought these prices were steep. One didn't mind the higher prices because the set would last a lifetime. I still own over 1000 pounds of the YORK iron plates. Also own the 160 Kg training bumper set. I wonder since our economy is slowing, will prices of Competitive Bumper sets lower in cost? I am sure the raw products which make up the bumpers/bars have dropped in price. Check out the LME prices for metals, ect... Should be a great time to buy but, seems as if the ressession hasn't driven the cost down on weights/bars/equipment???

2009 Prices:
According to two premier sites for selling products, the York metal 45 lb. plate is selling for $83.25 per plate. The York International non-certified 25 Kg bumper is selling for $301.50 per plate.

Hillbilly, is there any way you can scan that ad and post it?  That would be really cool to see!

Thanks for posting the info.

Hello Paul. Unfortunately I haven't the brains to post the ad from the 1983 magazine. I wish I knew how to post photo's and other things but, will ask my son if he could help. Michael is really good with computers and maybe he will help me out posting a photo. Check back in a day or so and I'll see if he can scan it for us. Have a good day, stay healthy & strong.
