Double-knee bend/scoop
« on: Feb 18, 2009, 06:29 PM »
Hi everyone, just a quick question:

Is the Double-knee bend/scoop a natural reaction that happens by itself or should it be tought as a concious movement. And how does it occur naturally, what causes your body to unconciously get in that position? Just want to know your views on the topic,

Thanks

Controversial subject. I have seen this one get people upset. I'll just say IMO if you try to teach it, then the lifter will hip kick. It should come naturally if the movement is taught correctly and the lifter is allowed to develop the feel for the lift over time.

IMO definately 100% comes naturally.  If you try to teach it as Chris said you get the hip-kick, pushing the hips into the bar, or your get a movement where the hips drop during the transition causing a drop in the force on the barbell.  It happens because if you lift correctly (see my powerpoint for reference) the hamstrings are stretch during the first pull and when the back begins to work as a lever during the second pull it cause the knees to push under the bar other wise your hamstrings would rip out.

Is this for a school project? :)

The reasons have been explained. Lifting the bar from the floor causes the legs to straighten and puts increasing strain on the hamstrings. It is natural to rebend the knees and unload the hamstrings. Aside from that, the rebending of the knees produces a pre-stretch in the quads which helps them contract more powerfully.
