Recommended weight collars?
« on: Feb 02, 2009, 07:40 PM »
I've been using the kind with a bolt on it that you screw down by hand. It's a little annoying to do every time. Also they're kind of cheap, they tend to rattle around. I also have a pair of spring collars, which I can't use yet because I'm only using ten pound plates (just started lifting), and they stick out too far. They were also cheap, but they seem pretty good. I'm not sure how long they'll maintain their springiness though after I start using them. The thing is that I need 2 pairs of collars, because I'm using metal plates with padded platform, and I need the plates to be pushed out so that they fall on the center of the padding. So I'm thinking of using the spring collars I already have for the 1st pair, and then getting another (maybe better quality) pair.

What kinds of weight collars do you guys prefer to use? Which brand specifically would you recommend, if I were to upgrade? I'd spend maybe $40-50 at most, I think.

I was about to say I don't use collars but then I read your post more closely and I would say the collars I have used that were pretty good and easy to get on and off are the black collars that twist on.  See this picture to get what I mean:

We have had the best luck with the plastic kind with rotating lever closures.  Simple and very durable.  Picture:  [attachthumb=#]  They run about $40 per pair.

The husker type collars like the ones Andy showed work well, but I've had two where the spring-loaded locking sleeve broke and could not be repaired.

Fair enough, just to be be clear however- WE has no rules against weightlifting related advertisements. We welcome them, except for nutritional supplements.

Thanks for the responses - both the muscle clamps and the husker locks look good. I think may go with muscle clamps though, since I've used them before in gyms.
