Joe Sakic injury blamed on Olympic weightlifting
« on: Nov 29, 2008, 07:46 AM »
In the article, it is mentioned that hockey star Joe Sakic is injured from doing cleans in the gym. Opponents of explosive lifting all over are going to love this one.

http://blogs.denverpost.com/avs/2008/11/28/28-seconds-for-sakic/

".....Sakic suffered the injury doing “cleans”, an Olympic weightlifting exercise. This is the second time an Avalanche player has hurt his back weightlifting. Prior to last season, Milan Hejduk hurt his back doing squats - and he missed a practice earlier this year with what was listed as a sore back.

No one is suggesting here that the Avs should stop lifting weights. But, um, maybe a little more care in doing them?....."

Shaun,

I hurt my lower back twice in the past month. The first time doing a clean with 45KG, the second an RDL with 50KG. I don't blame weightlifting, I blame OLD age.    :)rotf
If I was doing any better, I would be twins!!!

Yes, I whole heartily agree the anti-olympic lifting clowns will have a field day on that piece of news -- so to speak ! I'm sure that the so-called expert strength coach at my local university (and I don't mean the one at Ann Arbor ) will eat it up,too ! If the coach at this NHL team doesn't know how to not only teach the olympic movements & lifts plus coach it properly -- its no wonder that Sakic got hurt !
Dane,as Fred Lowe told me long ago after I'd reached 45 years of age -- you can still do olympic lifting, but since you're not 30 anymore its going to take more of a warmup ! Well, guess what the longer warmup doesn't hurt, but actually makes everything go smoother !

                                 Regards,

P.S. I have heard long ago that most of the Russian players in the NHL have done olympic movements long before they came to the NHL and have done some fairly impressive power cleans !
