Tudor Bompa's advice to me in 2000
« on: Nov 01, 2008, 08:34 AM »
I'm pasting in some comments made to me from the popular author Tudor Bompa

For the possible interest of participants of this forum

Bompa:
"Dear Shaun,
Whether the pulling techique is good or not you don't have a choice but
to use at times >100% in pulling movements. This will be in the MxS phase.Work on technique in the previous phases, and  maximum attention  also in the MxS phase.During warm-up you can use lower %,and still concentrate on
technique.Certainly, you can alternate the >100% loads with lower ones in certain days of the week even durin MxS phase. This will allow you to
overcompensate/recover.In doing so you certainly can better recover, and
therefor be able to foccus on technique. When very fatigued, techique will be affected.Lower % could also be used prior to major competitions in order to develop power, and as such increase the speed of lifting. After all power is the dominant ability in weight lifting.
Best wishes."

Dear Shaun,

In reply to your massage of jan.4, I like to make the following comments:

-the concept of periodization is applicable to any sport.depending on
your competitions.you have to design your periodization model
(i.e.adaptation-max.strength-max.strength and power-unloading for
peaking)
-this simple model will result into high level of power, the dominant
ability in olympic weight lifting.in order to lift the barbell as
quickly as possible,it is extremely important to increase the
max.strength on your  leg and back, and the "pull".they perform most of
the work.
-of similar importance for your planning are
-the loading pattern you'll use
-allow for regeneration cycles
-good selection of competitions

I have refered in technical jargon since you have read my books. If
negative read the planning section in my book "Periodization:theory and methodology of training",and the planning section and training methods for max.strength and power in the other book : "Periodization training for sports.

Good luck in your athletic endeavours

I agree with periodization. It isn't dead and it never will be.

As do I.   I wish I would have understood it the way I do now 15 years ago.  I would have avoided a lot of nagging injuries and made a lot better progress.

Personally, I love waving my weeks in my training - heavy week, light week, medium week, heavy week, light week, medium week, heavy week.  It's working for me and I love.  Thanks Coach Randy.

All the best,
  Arden
