Snatch & C&J Ratios
« on: Apr 29, 2005, 01:15 PM »
Coaches,

How much do you pay attention to the ratio of snatch to c&j?  For example, if a 85kg lifter snatches 115 and jerks 147.5, but the ratio computes a 122.5 snatch for a 147.5 jerk; would you impose a heavier dose of snatches or continue to train both lifts equally?  Or does it really matter?  Thanks in advance.

Buck,

Is there any question as to what I would have you do?

Buck, from what I have read, the snatch is supposed to be 78-82% of the C&J.  As for whether or not I would alter training based on that, I guess it would depend why I felt those numbers were out of that range.

Some lifters are better suited, by their physical make-up, for a particular lift.  For example, take Rob Hall, a tall, long armed, long legged, 77 kilo lifter, good positions, good technique, nothing that stands out as a major technical flaw.  His best lifts are, I believe, 132.5 and 150 or 152.5.  But, to my thinking, he is built for the snatch, where a short, stocky lifter may have a better C&J.

Another example is a lifter with poor or out of proportion leg strength.  That will hurt the clean more than the snatch.  I would address that problem directly.

I have another question (seems the first one is pretty well answered). Is there a ratio or range of your clean and jerk to your snatch? For example: you can c & j 200kg, what should you snatch?

As a general rule of thumb, your snatch should be 78-82% of your C&J.  Others may have some exact figures, but I believe that when the press was contested that number was around 75%.  Perhaps, with the elimination of the press, the jerks failed to progress as much as the snatch and clean?
