Worst call of the Games??
« on: Sep 14, 2008, 01:36 AM »
Was there a more outrageous call by officials than the Jury stripping of the JPN lifter in the W 69's??

She made an impressive 90 on her 3rd SN, w/ a slight right elbow tremor, was thrilled to make it, got the correct call from the refs (2 to 1)...

... and then the Jury wasted everyone's time (perhaps throwing off the next lifter, who failed her last try) calling it bad?!?!

Fortunately she came thru w/ 3 good C&Js (the last was a WOW), but the Jury goof was really unforgivable.

I noted two earlier bad calls in the 48's, but to have a good one made bad was just horrendous  :)banghead

Our awesome sport REALLY DESERVES a commensurate system of judging -- the inconsistency and subjectivity of what we have are just so 3rd rate!!

Anyway, as long as I'm on a roll...

The VEN and COL lifters have just about the most colorful (eye-popping, especially on some) lifting suits, but the very best singlets in my view...

... simple, yet dramatic, classy, etc...

... are the ones worn by EGY!!

Anyone think there's a better one (one prime element is the ability to not show embarrassing chalk smudges)??

The debacle of the Adidas etc. taping-over (and safety-hazard hip #'s) was prime evidence of IWF incompetence, but even w/o that stupidity...

... the fine suits US lifters wear look SOOO off the rack -- nice, but nothing special.

Then again, the bid/contract process of USOC/NGB outfitting has not produced anything especially worthwhile in decades -- the best we usually see is the individual attire of the gymnasts AFTER the team competition.

Oh well... I guess it's always interesting to see how and by whom we get surpassed...

I agree that Colombia has a nice suit. I`d wear Canada`s any day but the suit I think looks the best out of all is Mexico's.

The Canada suit is definitely cool -- and was worn well by some impressive lifters this time!!

Do you mean the MEX suit worn by the 63 B gal?  Not sure I saw the appeal, but she's quite an athlete.

I think the EGY suit would look good in a lot of other color combos, but usually w/ the dark under section, strong/dark colors on the sides, same for sleeves and color, and the light front for contrast and minimal chalk show.

The Mexico suit I am referring to is the green one worn by Damaris Aguirre - I don't know what suit the woman in 63B was wearing. I don't have any good photos atm - not on my work computer anyway.

Aguirre was SO impressive -- such a regal demeanor, and awesome performance!!

Other than the numbers, you wouldn't know she wasn't the champ -- that's the way to compete/lift!!

Yes, it is a cool suit (I would have included more red), definitely better than what the US uses, and the use of the same "font" as was used in '68 for "MEXICO" is a nice touch (and still bold).

Still, I gotta say I like that EGY suit way beyond the rest.

Thanks!!

Wait.  By suit, do you mean lifting singlet?  Because "Canada" didn't have one at these Olympics.  Every athlete had to get their own made

I haven't seen a single second of Canadian weightlifters in Beijing, I can't access any of the CBC video so I am not sure what the Canadians wore. In the past I have liked their suits, like the Commonwealth Games 2006 suit. I saw a few pics of Marilou but they were from a side angle and she was in a squat so I could barely see the suit. I have a pic of Jeane in a black suit in Beijing but it's only from the neck up. Now that I have gone back to Jasvir's videos I can see his suit was nothing special. Nevertheless, I`d wear a potato sack if it was what Canadian weightlifters wore ;)

You're right, now that I think about it...

I think the light and medium-sized lifters wore something Maple Leaf, and the 75-er something else...

Oops!!
