Strongman Steiner wins German TV award

Austrian-born weightlifter Matthias Steiner has received a German TV award for his reaction in the moments after winning Gold for Germany at this year's Olympics.

Legendary German TV presenter Harald Schmidt and "Bambi Award" director Patricia Riekel announced that the 26-year-old won the 'most emotional TV moment of the year' award which he will receive at the 60th Bambi Ceremony on 27 November in Offenburg, Germany.

Steiner won Gold for Austria's arch-rivals Germany at this summer's Olympics in Beijing after falling out with the Austrian weight-lifters union over the decision to employ a personal coach instead of working with the Austrian team.

Steiner, who suffers from Diabetes, heaved a total of 461 kilograms in the men's super heavyweight category, clinching the win in Beijing with a 'clean and jerk' of 258 kilos.

Last year, his German wife Susann died in a traffic accident.

At the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Steiner came seventh for Austria.
