Weightlifting Tiebreakers
« on: Aug 15, 2008, 05:29 PM »
I find it disheartening that one can lose a gold medal simply becuase they weighted .08kg more than another lifter.  That's such a random, almost arbitrary way to break a tie - there are many other measurements you can look to that would better determine which lifter should win in the event of a tie.  That fraction of a kg means nothing as far as ability, nearly every lifter is right near the ceiling of their weight class anyway.  Might as well flip a coin.

How about which lifter got the total first (based on attempt #), then who's second best lifts were the most (I read those two suggestions somewhere), then maybe who's higher in the world rankings.  Hell, even a roshambo on the medal podium would be more fair :) That is by no means an exhaustive list, I'm sure in 15 minutes this forum could develop a better tiebreaker protocol than the IWF.

That's what I think  :)peaceout

Step 1:  Any positive drug test, ever, loses a tie.  If still tied,

Step 2:  Least red lights wins.  If still tied,

Step 3:  Highest total after five attempts.  If still tied,

Step 4:  Highest total after four attempts.  If still tied,

Step 5:  Audience applause meter.  If still tied,

Step 6:  Tamas Ajan can say who won orally, and during the medal ceremony, take it back, say it was never officially announced, and give it to the other guy.

I say the person with the most V's in their name wins the tiebreak, 'cause weightlifters with V's in their names are just badasses  :)thumbsup
