North American Open
« on: Jul 21, 2008, 09:52 PM »
It looks like this years American Open will be the North American Open.

Sounds like a cool idea. Anyone have thoughts on it?

I agree, I would enjoy a USA/Canada/Mexico meet.

Calling it the North American Open may be a misnomer because it's not an open meet for 2 of the three countries - eg. Canada is sending a team but I assume that those who aren't representing the country are not eligible. It will be nice to see a men's team from Mexico. It has been non-existent recently.

I haven't done any research on this but will the QT's be the same for all of the participants?  I would be great to have a meet where anyone in those 3 countries who are up to date members of their National Weightlifting Association could participate if they meet the QT.

The USAW newsletter didn't have any details. I'm curious about the QTs also.

It would be a shame if other countries limited who would attend. I know some Canadians on another forum that might be crazy enough to make a drive like that.

I don't think there is anything wrong with calling it "open" if the meet organizers will accept anybody.  It's not their fault if the Canadian federation won't let non-national team members go; that's the Canadian federation's decision.

As for Canadians who are not selected not being able to go, that's pretty common.  If I'm not mistaken, all Canadians need permission from the federation to compete in any out of country competition (I remember my old club got in trouble once for going a local comp in Washington state, a couple hours from our home club, because we didn't get permission first.)  I guess if Canada is sending an 'official' team, they don't want people getting confused as to who's actually representing Canada.  What would be interesting though, is if Canada sent an official team to represent Canada, but allowed other Canadian lifters who were interested in going to compete while representing their club, not their country.
