Yes, I believe the drugs may be cheaper elsewhere, but it is still money that could be spent on normal needs like food, gas, medical, etc. And, of course, the money the doping nations are spending on beating the testing and the doping bribes/fines when they mess up and get caught could be spent on these poor lifters as well, and that is a lot of money. Poverty is no excuse in my opinion, and the drugs put their health at risk which could create a far bigger penalty for poverty later in life (and has in many cases in Russia, E. Germany, China, etc).

Something else that might be interesting, take the results from the '06 and '07 worlds and add, say 6-8% to our guys. I think it reasonable to assume that lifters from countries that had positive tests, probably use drugs even though they were not caught. Add a conservative 7% to our totals and see where that would place us. For the bombouts just give them their openers. How many slots would we have?

So the Greeks have "agreed" to give back 2 mens slots and 2 women. Its certainly very generous of them to return some of the slots they stole in the first place.
What a total friggin joke.

HAHAHA, I find this partially humorous that I am reading this just after taking a percocet :P. Better watch out for me and my doping habits!
PS I am kiddin folks I get to take it, I just had surgery, so thus a perscription.
I blame it on the fact that I am a rich American, so I have to sit at work all drugged up 5 days after hernial surgery because I have all this money I can just afford to take off work super long to recover.

Here is my excel of the breakdown of doping busts and slots earned. Let me know if you see any errors.
I just realized this as I was writing, that my file is a comparison of 2004 to present suspensions so the numbers of busts seem high. Should I go back and slim it down to just 2006-2007 suspensions or 2007 suspensions only.
PS I just saw 2008 was added so I will update my records. So let me know the years I should include on the file because obviously editiong it down will be really fast and easy.

Andy,
Thanks very much. I will take a look at this soon. I think its appropriate to include the positives from the entire quad even though the Olympic qualification system doesn't cover the entire time period. The point remains the same. Cheating pays off big time in the IWF, and strict drug testing means less and less slots in the Olympics every four years.

Andy,
I sent this along to Dennis Snethen, the USAW President, since the subject came up in another conversation. Perhaps it will prove useful even without publishing a paper on it.
Thanks again

Hi Chris,
we in Australia were literally one lift off from having either or both of our previously suspended lifters represent us in Beijing (this happened in 2004), I guess we all got LUCKY this time around, I know I was happy with the outcome!!
