Ducks Host 17th Annual Oregon Weightlifting Classic

EUGENE - Some of the strongest competitors from throughout the Pacific Northwest and Rocky Mountain regions will take part in the 17th-annual Oregon Weightlifting Classic beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Ducks’ Casanova Center weight room.

Participants will compete in five separate weight classes within their age groups in men’s and women’s divisions, with the finishes determined by an aggregate total of weight lifted in the clean and jerk as well as snatch competition.

Included in the competition will be a pair of Oregon football players, with defensive tackle Ra’Shon Harris and defensive back Marvin Johnson both taking part in their first weightlifting competitions. Harris equaled a team-high 415-pound bench press during the football team’s winter workouts and boasts of a 341-pound clean, while Johnson is one of the Ducks’ strongest defensive backs.

The competition is open to the general public free of charge. Competitors and spectators are asked to enter the Casanova Center through the doors at the east end of the building nearest Autzen Stadium.

The Oregon Classic is a great meet.  I used to lift in it every year in the 90s, along with most of the other Calpian lifters in Washington.  Jim Radcliffe is an excellent meet director; he does a great job of setting the venue up professionally and there's usually a big audience.  I did some of the biggest lifts of my career there.  Anybody in the Pacific Northwest who is looking for a good meet should put this one on their calendar.

Just posting to say that I am getting up at 4:30am tomorrow to get to the weigh in on time. I am incredibly stoked! :)woohoo

I also hope to make at least a clean and jerk PR, although I think that a total PR is possible! I also have a competition with my coach who is also lifting. I only outweigh him by ~25kg, should be close though.

Hopefully we will get some video up on youtube after the event!

Matt does your club still host the Bad Mother Open?

In the article about the Oregon Open I note that there are only 5 weight classes. This is a typo from the original article I assume.

Good luck Stuart.

Considering my right eye decided to contract conjunctivitis, I feel that I did a good job. I made my openers of 70/90 which is an improvement of 17.5kg over my last comp. I was so bad off that I managed to miss my first clean due to balance, then nearly missed a 92.5 clean sideways.

A few corrections to the results: the '105kg' class should read 105+kg. I was a distant second in the 105kg category to Brian Breedlove. I am also relatively certain that there was at least one 85kg lifter as well.

I am left to wonder about the football players, I am curious who they learned the lifts from. I would be surprised if it was Ziegler. I would say that they had the strength to beat him, or at least give him a run for his money. Ziegler was awesome to watch! :)hail

The actual results for this comp will show up at this link in a few days or so (I hope)
