Masters meet in Savannah

The National Masters Weightlifting Championships, an event for athletes 35 and over, will start today and run through Sunday at the Anderson-Cohen Weightlifting Center in Savannah.

Event director Howard Cohen said more than 220 lifters will compete.

The competition starts at 9 a.m.

Age groups start at 35 and go up in increments of five years.

The women will lift first at 9 a.m., with the men's oldest classes lifting next.

The event will resume at 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. On the final day, the 45-under class will lift.

Cohen said the event will have seating for spectators and a master of ceremonies to explain the sport. There is no charge for admission.

"This (meet) is also the last qualifier for two international events, the Pan Am Masters in Puerto Rico and the World Masters in Greece, " said Cohen, who will try and defend his title in the 75-plus age group in the 69-kilo class.

Two Olympians will compete - Howard's son, Michael Cohen, who made the 1980 team, and Detroit's Fred Lowe. Michael Cohen will compete in the 94-kilo class, which he won last year, and Lowe will lift in the 77-kilo class.

Other top competitors include defending national champion Dr. Dorothy Gardner (63-kilo class), Carolyn Trosdale and Patricia and Mark Iocovozzi.

The event is hosted by Team Savannah, which will have 20 lifters compete, Howard Cohen said.

Former Champlain resident is golden

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Barbara Boyer, former Champlain resident, recently competed in the National Masters' Weightlifting Championships April 4-6 in Savannah, Ga.

Boyer won the gold medal in her age group and weight class and the best lifter award in her age group. Boyer's six-for-six lifting performance with final lifts of 40kg Snatch and 55kg Clean & Jerk, for a total of 95 kgs, set nine National Masters' records.

Boyer, who is wintering in Florida, self-trained at the Fitness Advantage gym of Ft. Myers, Fla. with the aid and support of Jeremy Barnett, a Crossfit trainer. After a brief rest period, Boyer will continue to train for competition this fall.
