Killerwhales impress at high-calibre competitions

Two members of the Lake Trail Weightlifting Club travelled to Winfield for the Canadian Junior Weightlifting Championships on Jan. 19. Aaron Webster and Adrian Cadmus-Dixon were selected to represent B.C. at this prestigious event.

Cadmus-Dixon was first up, but failed to make weight, weighing in at 56.54kg and being entered in the 56kg bodyweight category. He had almost an hour to make the weight, but couldn’t quite do it, so, he competed in the 62kg category as a guest lifter

“He lifted well, making five of his six attempts,” said Killerwhale coach Ed Lafleur. Webster snatched 58 and 62 before just missing with 66kg which would have been a new PR (Personal Record).  He then cleaned and jerked 75, 77 and 79kg, all successfully, giving him his second highest total ever, 141kg. “Adrian lifted extremely well, considering he had been training for, and competed in, this important event with a sprained wrist,” Lafleur noted.

Webster competed in the 77kg bodyweight category with seven other athletes and was amongst the youngest in the category. He also made five of his six attempts. ”He opened with a snatch of 77kg, which he made solidly, then took and made 81 which equalled his PR,” Lafleur said. On to the jerk, he started with 98kg which he made, then took 102 for his second attempt, which he also made for a new clean and jerk PR. “With nothing to lose, Aaron asked for 106kg for his third, which would be better than he had ever made,” Lafleur said.

“He made the clean, with a fair bit of ease, then dipped and drove the bar overhead. He split underneath, locking his arms solidly and stuck it.” Lafleur said the recovery was aftermath, as the referees gave the down signal and the lift was judged “good lift” for another PR, and a total PR of 187.

The following weekend, on Saturday, Jan. 26, three lifters travelled to Port Alberni for the A&R Memorial Tournament. Lafleur said Colton Tuka, Austin Guignard and Ritchel Fernandez all had successful tournaments and all came home with medals.

Tuka (in Grade 5 at Courtenay Elementary School), and Guignard (in Grade 7 at Lake Trail) both lifted in the 56kg category in this, their second tournament. Tuka made all six of his lifts, snatching 22, 25 and 28kg, the latter two both PRs. He then jerked 30, 33 and 36 which was also a PR, giving him a PR total of 64. Tuka finished second behind Guignard, who totalled 72.

Guignard snatched 27, 30 (PR) and 33 (PR) and then jerked 35 and 39 which was also a PR. “He then took 42kg for his third attempt, and looked as if he made that lift, too. But, even though it looked to be a better lift than his 39, he only got one of three white lights, not quite enough to be a good lift,” Lafleur said. His 72 total was also a new PR.

Fernandez opened with a snatch of 70kg, which he fixed overhead for a good lift. He then took 75, which didn’t quite stay up. For his third, he added a kilo, and kept this weight overhead for a PR snatch of 76.

“Ritchel started the clean and jerk with 85kg, which he cleaned easily, drove overhead and stuck it, getting good lift,” Lafleur said. “He next took 89, but didn’t quite lock the bar out, so got two red lights and no lift.” For his third and final clean and jerk he took 90, but again didn’t quite get a solid lock out, so he had to settle for a 161 total and the silver medal in the 69kg bodyweight category.

Good article. It's always nice to get in the paper. I see in the 3rd paragraph the author got your name mixed up, calling you Webster.
