squat performance of heavy-weight weightlifters
« on: Jan 11, 2008, 06:49 AM »
Hallo everbody,

i just changed from powerlifting to weightlifting.
I saw very impressive squat-videos of light- and middle-weight weightlifters on youtube.
I am also interested in the squat performance of heavy-weight weightlifters (Chigishev, Rezazadeh, Klokov, Nerlinger,...) (front-squat and back-squat). Has anybody some information for me?
This would be very nice! Thank you!

Best wishes to all weightlifters

Daniel

I think you'll find that videos of the heavyweights squatting major weights are rarer, because it's a trend that the SHW guys don't lift heavy as often. For instance in the Soviet literature the number of 90% lifts per month declines each weight class from 56 kg to 105+ kg in favour of more reps with lighter weight, in part because it needed to build and maintain their muscle mass.

Right about now somebody is going to point out that Antonio Krastev only did singles ... yeah, yeah.. but in general with all the conventionally trained supers in the world especially Germans, Russians, former Soviet countries I think what I wrote above is true for them

The first one is 310 and the  second one is 270.

There's youtube video of Rezazedeh front squatting over 600lbs. I can't find it because the tube is blocked for me at work, but it shouldn't be too hard to find.
I think it's also in the pretty popular "strength feats" youtube video that collects all kinds of big lifts to a selection of mostly crappy music.

In 1985 I spoke with Ironbar Bassey of Nigeria who lifted in the '84 Olympics as an 18-year-old 253 lb. superheavyweight.  He asked me about powerlifting squats and how they were accomplished.  He was relieved to find out about the wraps and depth, as he felt that his squatting was inferior.  I asked him what his PR was and he informed me that he had done it prior to the '84 games and that it was 367.5 kg.
At that time he was being trained by a Bulgarian coach named Abdrakhov.
