Another Florida high school article
« on: Jan 21, 2008, 11:01 AM »
I swear, at least half of all English language news articles in our sport posted to the Associated Press are about high schools in Florida. Here's another.

Source: http://www2.tbo.com/content/2008/jan/19/pa-anderton-wins-4th-sac-title-in-weightlifting/

The article is primarily about a person who won her 4th title in the Sunshine Athletic Conference, as the web address suggests. Another of her teammates did quite a bit better IMO and here's a quotation from the article

---------------------
(Brianna) Hooker, a junior, took her third conference title, winning the 119-pound class. Hooker, who was fourth in the state last year, had a 145-pound lift in the bench press and a 135-pound clean and jerk for a 280-pound total. Hooker has never lost a weightlifting meet, but she was uncertain whether or not she would lift. She is hoping for a collegiate gymnastics scholarship, and she had to make time for both sports.

Hooker treasures the conference title.

"It's the most important meet of the whole season because you get your school placed," she said. "I'm glad I chose to lift. It's nice to be here. I do gymnastics. Weightlifting is important to me. I love it. It is also benefiting my gymnastics."
----------------------

I assume they are almost always coached by powerlifting people as their bench press is ordinarily higher than their clean & jerk. This girl in gymnastics could probably clean & jerk 180 or more with better coaching in that lift. Good luck getting involved, Chris.  Florida is a powerhouse waiting for someone like you, if they can only recognize what you have to offer.
