Records fall at Lakeville
By Matt Steichen
The Farmington weightlifting team opened its season by setting numerous personal records at the first Big Cats Meet, a triangular that also included Lakeville North and South, Saturday at Lakeville South High School.
Fourteen of the 28 members of the Tiger squad were returning competitors and 13 of them turned in at least one personal record. Of those, 10 set two or more personal bests.
“I am really excited about our chances this year,”coach Scott Meier said. “We are way ahead of where we were last year at this point. We still have a few holes in our lineup, so I’m still looking for a few more kids to compete. If we can fill those, we should have a great chance at our fourth straight state title for the schoolage team.”
For the schoolage boys (16 and under), the story was Tri Phu. Phu set a state record in the snatch on his opening attempt and ended up with three new school records for his weight class. Teammate Derek Waldbillig also set three school records in his weight class.
All six Tiger competitors in the schoolage girls division were making their weightlifting debut. Corrissa Kass and Megan Nekowitsch each set three school records in their respective classes, Corryn Taylor posted a school record in the snatch and Payton Smith was one of several lifters to go six for six.
In the junior girls (17 and older) division, three FHS lifters set personal bests. Morgan Weinand and Roxy Desseyn each surpassed their previous top lifts in the clean and jerk and snatch, respectively, and Alex Johnson qualified for the state meet with three school record lifts in her first career meet.
Andrew Froehling came in as the most experienced Farmington lifter in the boys junior division and he led the way with three personal records. Duke Ameyaw also accomplished that feat.
The final highlight of the day came from Mike Doherty, who set a school record with a clean and jerk of 254 pounds.
Farmington will compete again Jan. 5 at Northfield.
