I think the USAW charges more for masters because they figure you should probably be making good money by the time you're 35. So why not ask masters to contribute a little more to the federation, since they should be able to afford a few more bucks. That's just my own thought on why the membership is increased for masters. I haven't talked to anyone in the USAW about the actual justification. I don't have a problem with it. $40 per year isn't a big deal.
If you register as a master, you can still compete in all senior meets. Registering as a master just gives you permission to compete in masters meets as well. I'm pretty sure you can still set senior records when you're registered as a master, too. I'd check it out for sure with the federation, though.
You can set masters records when you compete in senior meets, but I think you have to fill out the record form that somebody included in one of the posts of this thread. I know the masters records in the 35-39 are something like 153/180 (Broz just did the snatch recently). But those aren't the biggest lifts in that category. I saw Mario Martinez do 170/200 at the Senior Nationals in 1994, when he was 37. I think he also did a 207.5 C&J that same year at the Goodwill Games. But I don't think he ever filled out a masters record form, so his lifts aren't recorded.

Here
is a link to the master's records page. The 56kg weight class records for the 35-39 age group are 75/90/165 total. These records were set by the same lifter on the same day. The 62kg records are 100.5/122.5/220. These records were set by 2 different lifters several years apart.
Chris, I notice that the 105+ Clean and Jerk record for 35-39 group was set on 5/13/2007 in Schaumburg, IL. That is the date and place of the 2007 Sr. Nationals. I think that record was broken at the American Masters a few weeks ago by John Broz if memory serves me right but the list hasn't been updated yet. So it would seem that would answer all your questions - Yes, a registered master can set a record at any meet that is refereed by at leat 2 National level referees (see the record application). Yes, a registered master can compete at the Sr. Nationals provided they meet the qualifying total. I also notice that Dean Goad in lifting in the American Open and Dean is a current record holder in the 35-39 age 94 kg class. I believe Dean was born in 1968 making him 39.
Of course this is probably all up to interpretation which for some reason never seems to go the athlete's way

Well, I am now formerly registered as a Master with the USAW. It was my Christmas present to them, and they have been using it as an excuse not to deal with me on their violation of our American Record/Standard agreement, though the agreement was in no way dependent on me maintaining active membership. So, we will see if they suddenly start acting reasonable now that they got their $40 they want to give themselves in pay raises instead of spending on the athletes.
I notice Bryan Jacob is the American master record holder in the snatch. Its going to be an incredible honor to break one of his snatch records, something I never imaged possible for me to do. I believe I can break all of the master's records, including the World master records as well as the fake Sr. American clean and jerk and total records, assuming I don't get those invalidated before or after I break them. Should be a fun nationals. I am pretty excited.
Merry Christmas!

Pete,
Yea, you got me there- with some bad diction. Of course, maybe this is just the beginning of a new name for me, "The lifter formerly known as a sr American record holder but now known as a fake sr American record holder but real master record holder" or something like that...
Ahhh...maybe not as funny as it could or should be....but I tried...forgive me if it just doesn't come across as funny...
Merry Christmas
