Alex,

Find a good coach near you so that you don't pick up any bad habits.  Go to www.usaweightlifting.org and find where the nearest registered club is.  I competed as a teen basically without any formal coaching, and while winning some competitions, I never reached my potential and was often injured.  Thirty years later, I now compete in the Masters program, but with a world class coach.  My technique is far better, I work through the inevitable small injuries and avoid the major injuries, and managed to get the silver medal at the Pan Ams in July.  I encourage not to try to master the subtleties of Olympic lifting all alone.  Best of luck.

Good post, I am in the same boat here. Any more tips?

I am in Canada, so the coaches are not too close for me. It is a bit of a hike, so heading to a gym would be problematic with my school and work schedual. I could make the treck once and while though for technique. I also heard there is a guy at my work who was going to be in the 1976 Montreal Olympic games but got injured (Canada would have been the host nation, so that might have help him get in...either way I should ask him if he had any pointers. A shot in teh dark, but if he went to a gym still it would be great to work with him.
