Great 110 kg clean & jerk, Chris. Fast.
I have never understood why people would yell "tight, hold it, GET IT UNDER CONTROL" while a lifter is standing on the platform with the weight overhead. Like, are those comments helpful in an way or does the coach just feel the need to say something?

Yes,I concur Shaun that Chris really looked fast and tough enough in the 1990 nationals. Now as they say its on to your question. I go back to the early 1960's as far as attending meets and ever since then I really become observant a whatever meet I'm attending - whether local, regional or national caliber. I've been coached by many people in my 35 + years and most all of them add comments during the warmups and very subtle and short worded ones during the attempts in the meet itself. Until the last 10-12 years most of the coaches in this country had been very good lifters in their former "careers". You know that once the bar & weight is overhead if you're not tight in the upper torso -- you have a good chance of losing it ! I would say that's especially true in the more technical of the lifts ; the Snatch ! I was at that 1990 Nationals and there was sure a lot of missed snatches and like Fred Lowe relates to me or anyone else; "its very hard to sneak under a snatch, what do think you are a sneaky thief ?"

What a great video! Cool to see Tom Gough get pinned with 62 in the clean, only to come back years later and SNATCH IT!!! Awesome! Nice to see videos of some lifters who I have talked to and see them when they were studs.Lyons looked real strong in the clean and Schutz was awesome to make that to beat Michaels.

My computer won't let me see this video, for some reason. But I've seen the tape of the 1990 Nationals many times.
Actually, Schutz and Michels were in different weight classes at this meet. Schutz won the 110s and Michels won the SHW, but I think they lifted in the same session. Michels almost got beat by the Iranian Nazif, who lifted in tennis shoes. He cleaned 207.5 for the win and put it down before attempting a jerk because he elbow touched the clean. I think he probably would have jerked it.
How about Derrick Crass almost bombing with 192.5 and then making it on his third for the win?
This tape also has Brandon Baker on it. For those who don't remember, he was a Gayle Hatch lifter in the 82.5s who made the Junior World team with something like 130/165. Many people, myself included, thought Brandon was one of the top upcoming talents in the US. But his career was cut short when he sustained major brain damage during an altercation on the street in New Orleans. He came back and lifted for a few years after he recovered, but he was never the same. A real shame, because he was a hell of a lifter.

What kind of internet connection do you have? If its real slow, you will have problems as I made these videos pretty high quality video requiring pretty fast connections. Are you getting any kind of message when you try to view it?

I think it's just my computer. I'm on my work computer now and it's a peice of crap. I'll try to watch the videos later on my home computer, which works well. It should be fine then.

Matt,
Many schools use internet filters that block a lot of videos and websites, to save bandwidth usage on their networks so they are faster and more reliable for what they are intended and to keep the students from inappropriate usage.
