Li wins double gold as China dominate
By Martin Petty
CHIANG MAI, Thailand, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Li Ping clinched a gold medal double and came close to two world records on Thursday to further underline China's dominance of the world weightlifting championships.
With the women's clean and jerk gold medal already in the bag after a seemingly effortless first lift, Li boldly piled more kilos onto the bar in a bid to break her own world record and set a new mark for the 53kg total.
She went from a starting lift of 120kg to 134kg at her final attempt -- five kilograms higher than her own world record -- but the added weight proved too much and caused her to tumble backwards onto the platform with an expectant Thai crowd poised for celebration.
"When I was warming up, I felt like I was in the right shape to have a go at the overall world record," Li told reporters. "I knew I had to push it to the limit.
"There have been no world records so far at these championships. I wanted to change that.
She added: "I felt very sorry about my failure. I wanted both world records, but I panicked too much."
The nineteen-year-old lifted 93kg to take the bronze medal in the snatch and easily cleared 126kg in her second attempt at the clean and jerk to finish on 219kg.
Her two golds took China's impressive gold medal tally to 12 from the 15 on offer in the first four days of the championships, which is the main qualifying event for the Beijing Olympics.
South Korea's Yoon Jin-hee lifted 94kg in the snatch to win the other gold medal in the 53kg division. She also took bronzes for the clean and jerk and the overall total.
Nastassia Novikava of Belarus recorded 94kg in the snatch, 119kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 213kg to take the three silver medals.

Myanmar, Kazakh lifters suspended
CHIANG MAI, Thailand, Sept 21 (Reuters) - Two weightlifters from Myanmar and Kazakhstan have been suspended for two years for tampering with their urine samples at the world championships, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) said on Friday.
Kazakh Mukhit Usenbaev, who competed in the men's 69kg category, and Myanmar's Thant Zin Hnin (women's 53kg), attempted to manipulate samples provided during this week's competition, IWF President Tamas Ajan told a news conference.
"We don't accept manipulation of urine, we have very strict controls," Ajan said.

Anh Tuan wins bronze at world championship

Anh Tuan (left) failed to earn a good result at the world contest.
Nhan Dan - Vietnamese top weightlifter Hoang Anh Tuan produced a poor form at the world weightlifting championship in Thailand, winning only a bronze medal in men’s snatch.
Anh Tuan, who currently ranks second in the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) ranking for the 56kg category, successfully lifted 127 kilogrammes in snatch, winning a bronze medal. His best record was 128 kilogrammes for the event at the 15th Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, in 2006.
Tuan failed to lift 154 kilogrammes in clean and jerk in his first attempt, while his best record was 157 kilogrammes in Dohar.
The failure at the world championship has dented Anh Tuan’s hope to qualify for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Li Ping wins gold but fails to break world records in weightlifting worlds
Li Ping of China pushed herself to the limit but failed to shatter two world records after she took the gold medal in the women's 53kg category at the world weightlifting championships on Thursday.
Li, world record of the jerk, tried to lifted 134kg, 8kg more than her previous lift in her last attempt to break the world record of the jerk and total, but failed.
"I knew the weight was too much for me, but I just wanted to sit on the brink of my limit," Li told the press.
Her coach Ma Wenhui said shattering the world records was also a decision from the coaching team.
"She has never lifted such weight before. We hoped she could be more confident in the future so persuaded her to break the world records," he said.
The 19-year-old powerwoman had already won the gold medal in total after her first lift in the jerk. She hoisted 126kg in her next jerk to reach a total of 219kg.
"Competing in the Olympic Games is every athlete's dream and it is always my dream too," Li said.
"I don't know if I can be enrolled in the Chinese Olympic squad, but I will try my best to realize my dream," she added.
The world record of the jerk was set by herself at 129kg in the Asian championships in April. And the world record of total was created by her compatriot Qiu Hongxia in the worlds in 2006.
Li, who started wightlifting at 11, was not good at snatching as she finished with the third place at 93kg before her superb show in the jerk.
Nastassia Novikava of Belarus, who was placed fifth in the Athens Olympics, hoisted the silver with 213kg and Yoon Jin-hee of South Korea the bronze with 211kg.
The 26-year-old Novikava refused to tell her Olympic expectations in 2008 in the press conference.

Chiang Mai - China's Li Ping won two gold medals and South Korean Yoon Jin-Hee clinched the other in the women's 53kg division at the Royal World Weightlifting Championships yesterday.
Thailand's hopefuls Prapawadee Jaroenrattanatarakoon and Suda Chaleephay finished empty-handed. Worse was that Prapawadee (formerly Junpim Kantatien) was seriously injured and will miss the SEA Games.
Yoon took the gold in the snatch with an attempt of 94kg and Nastassia Novikava of Belarus won the silver lifting one kilogramme fewer than the Korean.
Li and Prapawadee both lifted 93kg but the Chinese got the bronze because her body weight was lighter. The Thai twisted her left elbow while attempting to clear 96kg and was taken to hospital.
World recorder holder Li was much too strong for her opponents in the clean and jerk clearing 126kg for the gold. Novikava (119kg) took the silver and Yoon (117kg) the bronze.
Li's combined weight of 219kg landed her another gold. Novikava took the silver with a 213kg attempt and Yoon the bronze with 211kg.
Suda finished fifth in the snatch (92kg), eighth in the clean and jerk (112kg) and fifth in the total weight (204kg).
Dr Eed Lorpayoon, the Thai team doctor, said Prapawadee's injury was serious and she would be out of action for three months.
Thailand manager Jitnara Navarat said Prapawadee would certainly miss the SEA Games to be held in Nakhon Ratchasima in December.

Bulgaria's Stoitsov lands gold medal double
By Martin Petty
CHIANG MAI, Thailand, Sept 21 (Reuters) - Ivan Stoitsov clinched Bulgaria's first victories of the world weightlifting championship when he took two gold medals in a thrilling men's 77kg on Friday.
Stoitsov held his nerve throughout a tense five-way contest which went all the way down to the final lift, where he shifted 205kg to win the clean and jerk and take the overall gold.
The stocky 22-year-old kept his composure and endured the wild celebrations of South Koreans Sa Jae-hyouk and Kim Kwang-hoon and Armenian Gevorg Davtyan, who each appeared convinced their final lift was the winner.
"I was ready to do battle. Even though I lost so much weight before the competition, I was fully prepared for this," said the Bulgarian, who tore off his support belt, marched off the platform and punched the air after completing the winning lift.
"It was really entertaining, for me too. What I couldn't understand was why the other guys were celebrating their victories so early -- I still had two more attempts remaining."
Stoitsov shifted 158kg in the snatch and 205kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 363kg.
Davtyan, the European champion, took silvers for the snatch and the total, South Koreans Kim and Sa took silver and bronze in the clean and jerk.
World record holder Oleg Perepechenov of Russia was a disappointing eighth on 190kg for the jerk.
Li Hongli bagged China's 13th gold medal of the competition when he lifted 166kg in an equally fierce snatch competition. He also took the bronze for the total.
Stoitsov said he never doubted he would be the eventual winner.
"I was confident I would do my job and lift whatever it took to win the gold medal," he told reporters.
"I was ready to do whatever was necessary, and I think I can lift even more than that."

Bulgaria's Stoitsov wins 2 gold for clean and jerk and Olympic total
CHIANG MAI, Thailand: Bulgaria's Ivan Stoitsov won a close fight to take two gold medals in the clean and jerk and the Olympic total in the World Weightlifting Championships in Thailand on Friday.
Stoitsov bedazzled the fans by lifting a 205kg in the clean and jerk and beat Armenia's Gevorg Davtyan by one kilogram in the total event.
The Bulgarian weightlifter lifted 158kg in the snatch but came back strong to win the clean and jerk and a combined weight.
"I was absolutely ready to battle even if I had to lose five kilograms before the fight. This is my personal best record," said Stoitsov who started weightlifting at the age of 13.
"Although I did not do my best today, I won two golds in my first major competition. I hope to do the same in the Olympics," Stoitsov added.
Stoitsov along with South Koreans Kim Kwang-hoon and Sa Jae-hyouk were neck and neck in the clean and jerk. Kim lifted 201kg to settle for the silver, beating Sa by 1 kilogram.
European champion Armenia's Gevorg Davtyan lifted 164kg to take the snatch silver and 198kg in the clean and jerk for a combined 362kg which fetched him the Olympic total silver.
"For a few minutes I felt I was the champion. But the best man won today and I congratulated him," said the Armenian who was celebrating with his coach after the clean and jerk.
Asian champion Li Hong from China won the bronze with a total lift of 361kg. He made a hat-trick in the snatch which he has dominated since 2005 with the lifting of 166kg. The snatch bronze went to Russian Oleg Perepechenkov after lifting 163kg.
China has won 13 gold medals out of 18 on offer. Bulgaria has won two golds while Cuba, South Korean and North Korea have won one each.
