Vietnam’s great hope fails at World Weightlifting Champs

Hoang Anh Tuan (third from the right)

VietNamNet Bridge - Hoang Anh Tuan, the greatest hope of Vietnam, didn’t perform well at the World Weightlifting Championship 2007.

Currently ranked second in the individual rankings of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), Anh Tuan was in group A for the best weightlifters in the world in the 56kg category.

However, Tuan’s records at this event discouraged fans when he lifted only 127kg and 154kg in his two weightlifting events, which were poorer than his records at the Asiad 15 (128kg and 157kg).

As a result, Tuan was not among the 29 weightlifters who entered the finals in the 56kg category. However, he won a bronze medal at this tournament.

Tuan’s failure is a great shock for weightlifting fans in Vietnam because Tuan is the greatest hope of Vietnam in the international playground. Moreover, with this poor record, it will be difficult for him to make the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Chen Xiexia was the last one to appear on the court. After three successful attempts in the snatch, the 24-year-old was awarded the gold for hoisting 96kg.10kg more than Thailand's Pramsiri Bunphitak, the silver winner. The story continued for the clean and jerk world record holder, as she completed her first two lifts with apparent ease. She tried to lift 122kg in her last attempt, but failed. With the combined lifts of 96kg in the snatch with 118kg in the clean and jerk she finished with 214kg, and was crowned the champion.

Chen Xiexia, clean and jerk world record holder, said, "Actually I am in the right form today, I was so eager to break the world record in clean and jerk and the total, so it's such a pity that I failed in the last attempt of the clean and jerk. "

Yang reaps rewards in Qiu's absence
World No 1 Yang Fan of China caused a sensation on his World Championship debut by sweeping the gold medals in the men's 62-kilogram competition yesterday at the Chiang Mai 700th Anniversary Stadium.
By Lerpong Amsa-ngiam

Yang, who was making his first appearance in an overseas event, lifted 315kg - the same as North Korean Im Yong-su - in the Olympic total, but his lower weight of 61.65kg against the 61.79kg of his rival put him atop the podium.

The Chinese teenager, who turns 20 next month, also ran away with the gold in the snatch and clean and jerk, though the North Korean matched him by lifting an identical 142kg and 173kg, respectively.

The contest would have been much tougher had Yang's compatriot and arch-rival Qiu Le been in the contest throughout. The two-time overall reigning champion injured his right elbow during his third attempt in the snatch, forcing him to retire from the competition. He suffered torn ligaments and needs to keep his cast on for three weeks. "It would have been more difficult if he had been in the competition, as we have always been equal,'' said Yang, who finished second behind Qiu in the Asian Championships earlier this year in Taian, China.

Despite the three gold medals, Yang was far from happy.

"I am not excited because I didn't perform to my best today. My goal was to carry 320kg in total,'' said the rising star.

Bulgaria's Ivaylo Filev had to be content with three bronze medals. He snatched 138kg and lifted 163kg in the clean and jerk for a combined 301kg.

In the men's 69kg, China's Zhang Guozheng won the clean and jerk and Olympic total. He snatched 155kg to take the silver, before lifting a massive 192kg in the clean and jerk for 347kg in total to grab two golds.

Compatriot Shi Zhingyong of China won his third consecutive snatch gold medal with a lift of 158kg. His lift of 180kg in the clean and jerk fetched him a silver in total. Turk Mete Binay lifted 154kg for the snatch bronze, while Bulgaria's Demir Demirev's overall score of 334kg also got him a bronze.

Frenchman Vencelas Dabaya, who won the clean and jerk and total last year, had to settle for a silver in the clean and jerk with a lift of 187kg. The bronze went to North Korea's Kim Chol-jin.

After three days, China are leading the table with 10 of the 12 gold medals up for grabs so far.

China's Li Ping grabs gold for clean and jerk and total

CHIANG MAI, Thailand: China's Li Ping brushed aside her poor form in the snatch to take two gold medals in the clean and jerk and Olympic total in the World Weightlifting Championships women's 53kg category on Thursday.

Li had to settle for just 93kg after failing to lift a 96kg in her last two attempts to take the bronze. But her outstanding mark of 126kg in the clean and jerk and a combined weight of 219kg propelled her to the top spot.

The Chinese teenager even went for the biggest challenge in her life by requesting 134kg in the clean and jerk in an attempt to set a new total world record of 227kg, but failed.

"I was just half-confident when I tried to break the record. The purpose was to go beyond my limit," said Li, from Hunan, who aims at taking part in the Olympics.

"The Olympics is everybody's dream. I want to be in the Games, but I'm not sure if I will be selected for the Olympics team," said the world record holder — at 129kg — in the clean and jerk.

South Korean Yoon Jin-hee was a surprise winner in the snatch after lifting 94kg, the same as Nastassia Novikava of Belarus. But Yoon's lighter body weight of 52.61kg compared to her rival's 52.83kg placed her atop the winner's podium.

Li Ping took the bronze despite the same lift of 93kg by Prapawadee Jaroenrattnatarakoon of Thailand. But Ping weighed 52.70kg which was a shade lighter than the Thai's 52.85kg

Novikava lifted 119kg in the clean and jerk for the overall 213kg to take the silvers. Yoon finished third in both categories, lifting 117kg in the clean and jerk for a total 211kg.

Beijing Olympic doors closing on Vietnam weightlifter

[attachimg=1]

Vietnam weightlifter Hoang Anh Tuan, ranked second in the world by in his weight group, has missed one of two chances to advance to the Olympics after a loss in Thailand this month.

Tuan, who Vietnam’s greatest hope for a gold medal at the Olympiad, did not win his 56kg division at the World Weightlifting Championship in Thailand.

He took the 127kg event early on but failed in 154kg event and was thus left unranked.

The result was disappointing after he took the silver medal at the Asian Games in Qatar last year.

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) had ruled that the top three winners in each weight category in Thailand would automatically secure spots at the Beijing Olympics next year.

With the failure, Tuan’s only hope lies in team events.

The Vietnamese national team will compete at the Asian Olympic qualifiers in January where teams finishing in the top 27 will send two players each to the Olympics.

The Beijing Olympic Games will be held August 8-24, 2008.

China's Chen Xiexia wins all 3 golds on 1st day of World Weightlifting Championships

CHIANG MAI, Thailand: China scooped all three gold medals on the first day of the Royal World Weightlifting Championships on Monday, with Chen Xiexia dominating the women's 48 kilogram (106 pound) category at the Chiang Mai 700th Anniversary Stadium.

The 24-year-old lifted 96 kg in the snatch and 118 kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 214 kg to give China a flying start.

Only 158 cm (62 inches) in height, Chen, making a debut in the tournament, failed to break her own world record of 120 kg in the clean and jerk after failing to lift the 122 kg attempt.

"I'm sorry that I couldn't break the record. But I will try to set three new records in the Chinese national championships," said Chen, who set the clean and jerk world record during the Asian Championships in Jinan in April, where she also reeled off three golds.

Thailand's Pensiri Laosirikul and Pramsiri Bunphitak produced three silvers and two bronzes.

Pramsiri settled for two silvers in the snatch by lifting 90 kg and the total category with a combined 196 points. Her mark of 110 kg in the clean and jerk earned her the bronze.

"Personally, I'm successful in this tournament as I also lift up the same weights during the training. My next target is to keep working even harder to be more competitive with Chen in next year's Olympics," said Pramsiri, bronze medalist in the 2006 Asian Games.

Teammate Pensiri, who won the Asiad silver last year in Doha, won the bronze in the overall category with 195 kg. She lifted just 83 kg in the snatch, but found her way back in contention with a fine 112 kg in the clean and jerk which won her the silver.

Turkish Nurcan Taylan came third in the snatch with a lift of 85 kg to take the bronze.

Three gold medals are up for grabs Monday in the men's 56 kg.
