Chinese continue domination
By Tor Chittinand

Chiang Mai _ China swept all six gold medals on offer in two divisions at the Royal World Weightlifting Championships yesterday. In the men's 62kg division, China's Yang Fan won three golds after pipping Im Yong Su of North Korea.

They were tied in all three categories but the Chinese triumphed because his body weight was lighter than Im.

In the men's 69kg class, Chinese Zhang Guozheng took the golds in the clean and jerk and total weight, while team-mate Shi Zhiyong finished top in the snatch.

After three days, China have reaped 10 out of 12 golds.

Yang and Im both lifted 142kg in the snatch and 173kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 315kg. It could have been an all-Chinese affair had Qui Le not been forced to pull out after getting injured during the competition.

Bulgaria's Ivaylo Filev won three bronze medals with lifts of 138kg in the snatch and 163kg in the clean and jerk for a combined 301kg.

''This is my first international tournament and I am happy to win the gold. Actually, I was aiming for 320kg in total but I could manage only 315kg which was still fine for me,'' said Yang who turns 20 next month.

In the 69kg category, it was a duel between two Chinese athletes as Zhang took two golds in the clean and jerk and the total weight and Shi claimed the gold in the snatch.

Shi's 158kg beat Zhang's 155kg in the snatch with Turkey's Mete Binay (154kg) taking the bronze.

Zhang comfortably won the clean and jerk with a lift of 192kg, while Shi could manage only 180kg.

Venecelas Dabaya of France (187kg) received the silver and North Korea's Kim Chol Jin (185kg) the bronze.

Zhang grabbed the gold in the total weight with 347kg while Shi was a distant second with 338kg and Bulgarian Demir Demirev came in third with 334kg.

Two Thai lifters Prapawadee Jaroenrattanatarakoon (formerly Junpim Kantatian) and Suda Chaleephay will be in action in the women's 53kg division today.

China wins two gold medals in weightlifting worlds

CHIANG MAI, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- A rookie and a veteran won two gold medals for China in the world weightlifting championships here on Wednesday.

Rookie Yang Fan flung the pressure off his shoulder to overcome Im Yong-su of DPR Korea to take the gold medal in the men's 62kg category.

Yang's teammate Zhang Guozheng, 33, managed to make an even more impressive presence as he crushed his competition with a total lifts of 347kg in men's 69kg division, which almost equaled with his winning total of 347.5kg in Athens Olympics.

The 20-year-old Yang stole the spotlight as he combined lifts of 142kg in the snatch with 173kg in the clean and jerk to finish with 315kg.

"I thought I could lifted 320kg in the competition, so I was not satisfied with my result," Yang told the press.

Im, 28, challenged Yang at his last attempt as he lifted 173kg to finish the competition with a total of 315kg. Yang was forced to lifted the same weight to win the gold because of the body weight advantage.

With a roar from Yang before he stepped onto the stage, the new bud made a awesome display of strength and power, lifting a decisive 173kg above his head to knock down the gold medal.

Im claimed the silver and Ivaylo Filev of Bulgaria the bronze on 301kg.

Zhang Guozheng produced a riveting display of lifting as he won his fist gold medal in three years.

Zhang, Olympic champion combined lifts of 155kg in the snatch with 192kg in the clean and jerk to finish with 347kg.

"I lost 7kg (to match up with the competing regulation) since I arrived here. I think I did a good job today," Zhang said.

"I believe I still have room to improve my performance and I can achieve my best result in the Olympics in Bejing. I am quite confident," added him.

Zhang had been absent from the worlds since he took the gold medal in the Olympics in Athens.

His compatriot Shi Zhiyong, 27, settled with silver at 338kg and Demir Demirev of Bulgaria, bronze medalist in last year's worlds, lifted a total of 334kg to take the bronze.

Another lifter of China, Qiu Le, quit worlds after his elbow was disjointed during the snatch event in men's 62kg category.

Qiu, world champion in 2005 and 2006, was sent to the local hospital and a ligament strain in his right elbow had been confirmed.

By Ajitpal Singh

Amirul failed in three attempts to lift
150kgin the clean and jerk in Chiangmai.

AMIRUL Hamizan Ibrahim has made his Beijing Olympic dream more difficult to attain, when he failed to achieve a placing in the 62kg category C final of the World Weightlifting Championships in Chiangmai, Thailand yesterday.

Amirul, the triple gold medallist in the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games, flunked in his three attempts to lift 150kg in the clean and jerk after a successful 112kg lift in the snatch.

Teammate Naharudin Mahayuddin finished fifth in the same event with a total of 270kg (125kg-snatch; 145kg-clean and jerk).

Both weightlifters are not ranked in the world's top 30 in their weight class.

Olympic spots in weightlifting are based on world ranking.
The other Malaysians competing in Chiangmai are Melbourne Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Matin Guntali (56kg), Mohd Hidayat Hamidon, Mohd Faerul Talib (both 69kg) and Zulkiifli Che Rose (77kg).

If the weightlifters fail to qualify, they will get another chance in the Asian Championships in Japan in May, where seven Olympic spots will be offered in each category.

Veteran Zhang loses 7kg to lift heavy medal

Veteran Zhang Guozheng of China produced a riveting display of lifting as he won his fist gold medal in three years at the the world weightlifting championships on Wednesday.

The 33-year-old Zhang combined lifts of 155kg in the snatch with 192kg in the clean and jerk to finish with 347kg in men's 69kg division, which almost equaled with his winning total of 347.5kg in Athens Olympics.

"I lost 7kg (to match up with the competing regulation) since I arrived here. I think I did a good job today," Zhang told the press.

"Losing 7kg was too hard for me. I ate almost nothing these days and it was just like I was dying," Zhang said.

Shi, winner in the Athens Olympics in the men's 62kg class, took the lead in the snatch as he lifted 158kg, 3kg more than Zhang. However, he failed in his last two attempts to lose the advantage.

Zhang continued his reign in his last attempt when he jerked 192kg to claim his victory.

"I lifted badly in the jerk and that's why I only lifted 338kg in total today," said Shi.

Weightlifter Eko grabs two bronze in world c'ships
By Matheos Viktor Messakh

Young Indonesian weightlifter Eko Juli Irawan has successfully made the transition to senior-level competition, winning two bronze medals at the World Weightlifting Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand, on Tuesday.

The 2006 Junior World Championship silver medalist lifted 124 kilograms in the snatch and 154 kilograms in the clean and jerk for a total of 278 kilograms in men's 56 kilogram class.

The 18-year-old earned the two medals after finishing third in both snatch and total lifts.

For Eko, the performance is better than at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar where he settled sixth.

Eko was only five kilograms behind Cha Kum-Chol of North Korea -- the new world champ -- who lifted 128 kilograms in the snatch and 155 kilograms in the clean and jerk, for a 283 kilogram total.

Despite a matching 283 kilogram total (130 kilograms in snatch and 153 kilograms in clean and jerk), 2006 world champ Li Zheng of China saw the gold go to Kum-Chol because the Korean is one-half kilogram lighter.

Indonesia Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Association (PABBSI) secretary-general Alamsyah Wijaya hailed Eko's success, noting that the points earned in the championships would help jack up the ranking of the country's national squad.

This ranking determines the number of weightlifters the country can field at the Olympic Games in Beijing, China next year.

According to Alamsyah, Indonesia has collected a significant number of points toward the Olypiad, after winning several events in the World Championships in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic last year.

"[We] secured three tickets for men's weightlifting . . . in Santo Domingo and we only need to defend our country rank," Wijaya told The Jakarta Post by phone.

Indonesia has eight men and five women competing in the championships, which will continue through Sept. 26.

The other men are Triyanto (62 kilograms), Budi Setiawan (69 kilograms), Sandaw Nasution (77 kilograms), Rohman Hidayat (85 kilograms), Tarso (94 kilograms), Reynaldi Zaenal (105 kilograms) and Dedi Apriadi (115 kilograms).

"Our next target is to raise our women's team rank high enough to win a ticket to the Olympiad," Alamsyah said.

On Monday, female weightlifter Citra Febrianti finished sixth in the women's 48 kilogram class after the 19-year-old lifted 82 kilograms in the snatch and 102 kilograms in the clean and jerk for a 184 kilogram total.

The other members of the women's team are Octa Dwi Paramita (53 kilograms), Kardewi and Prapti (both 63 kilogram class) and Shinta Darmariyani (75 kilograms).
